County seeks feedback on new amenities proposed for Oakton Community Park

The Fairfax County Park Authority is looking for feedback on proposed improvements to Oakton Community Park.

The authority is holding a public meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19 to discuss the project.

Located at 2841 Hunter Mill Road, the park has served the community since 2001, and its development is guided by a master plan finalized in 2005. As usage of the park has increased over the years, the authority saw a need to expand its amenities.

Oakton Community Park centers on the historic Oakton Schoolhouse, which was constructed around 1897 and continued to serve students until it was sold in 1912 and turned into a private residence. The park currently has a playground, natural surface trails and a parking area.

The authority is proposing a two-phase development plan. The first phase is funded by a $500,000 donation from a community member who chose to remain anonymous. It includes a new picnic pavilion with visitor furnishings, walkway enhancements to improve accessibility and a hose bib for utility access.

Construction for phase one is expected to begin in the spring of 2027 and finish by the summer.

Phase two of the project includes a restroom facility with a kitchenette, a renovated playground, expanded parking, a community trail loop and new interpretive signage. That phase doesn’t have a construction timeline because it is dependent on securing funding through donations.

The public meeting will be held at the historic Oakton Schoolhouse. County officials will provide presentations about the vision for phase one and how the community can get involved in phase two.

“Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting and contribute to the future of Oakton Community Park — whether by sharing feedback, learning about the planned improvements, or supporting the next phase of the park’s development through financial contributions,” the park authority said in a press release.

After the meeting, the county will accept public comments on phase one through 5 p.m. Nov. 20. Feedback can be submitted online, and questions can be directed to the park authority at parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov.
