Time is ticking down on the McLean Art Society’s stay at the Chesterbrook Shopping Center.
The nonprofit will welcome a new exhibit titled “City Life” to its McLean Art Gallery tomorrow (Wednesday) that’s now expected to be one of the last in the pop-up space at 6224B Old Dominion Drive.
According to the McLean Art Society, the gallery is scheduled to close sometime in January 2027 to make way for Glenwood’s, a new steak and sushi restaurant from Maryland that recently signed a lease for 7,000 square feet at the shopping center. The eatery is slated to start construction early next year ahead of an opening in the fall.
“The coming months [will be] a final opportunity to experience the creativity and talent of local artists, explore original artwork, and celebrate the vibrant arts community that has made the gallery so special,” the McLean Art Society said in a press release. “We invite everyone to stop by and enjoy the remaining exhibitions before the gallery closes.”
Opened in September 2025, the McLean Art Gallery has hosted a variety of exhibitions, workshops and events showcasing local artists. The space was always envisioned as temporary, established with the support of Chesterbrook’s owner, Federal Realty Investment Trust.
“We are searching for a new location,” a McLean Art Society spokesperson confirmed to FFXnow, adding that the nonprofit is hopeful it’ll be able to announce a replacement site by the end of this year.
Even if it doesn’t identify another location, the art society and its members will remain active in the community. Work by its artists is shown from September through May every year at the Spring Hill and Oakmont Rec Centers, and it currently has an art show on display at the McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Avenue) through Nov. 20.
For now, community members will be able to view “City Life” at the McLean Art Gallery from Nov. 4-29, alongside a rotating collection of original work by McLean Art Society members.
The new exhibition “explores the energy, character, and beauty of urban living through original artwork inspired by city streets, architectural forms, vibrant neighborhoods, bustling cityscapes, and the quiet moments tucked within the rhythm of daily life,” the society says.
An opening reception where visitors can meet the featured artists and enjoy live music, wine and refreshments will be held at the gallery this Friday, Nov. 6 from 5-7 p.m.
This month, the gallery will also offer watercolor classes led by Virginia artist Raj KC on Tuesdays from Nov. 17 to Dec. 15.
Over at the McLean Community Center, the McLean Art Society will host a free sketchbook journaling demonstration from watercolor artist Marni Maree on Nov. 20 at 11 a.m.
The McLean Art Gallery is open to the public for free on Wednesdays through Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.
