A driver hospitalized by a three-vehicle crash in McLean last Wednesday (March 9) has died, the Fairfax County Police Department confirmed today (Monday).
Karla Boggess, a 62-year-old resident of Berryville, is the first person killed in a vehicle crash in the county this year who wasn’t a pedestrian, according to police. At this time in 2021, there had been one non-pedestrian fatality.
Police responded to the crash around 3 p.m. on March 9 in the 8800 block of Georgetown Pike, shutting the road down from Old Dominion Drive to Towlston Road in Wolf Trap for more than three hours.
According to the police report, Boggess was driving east on Georgetown Pike in a 2005 Nissan Sentra when the westbound driver of a 2020 Audi A5 “lost control of his car, crossed the double yellow line, and hit the Nissan head-on.”
The collision sent the Audi spinning out into the path of a 1991 Toyota MR5 traveling east, which then rear-ended the Audi.
All three drivers sustained injuries, but the Audi driver’s were treated at the scene, while Boggess and the Toyota driver were transported to the hospital. The Toyota driver’s injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Boggess remained in the hospital for four days before dying from her injuries on Sunday (March 13).
“Detectives continue to investigate to determine if speed or alcohol were factors in the crash,” the FCPD said. “The investigation remains active, and details of the investigation will be presented to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for review.”
