A new restaurant specializing in cuisine from the Arabian Penninsula, particularly Iraq and Kuwait, is moving into the Town of Vienna.

Dar Mariam anticipates opening in late December at 107 Maple Avenue West, the storefront that was vacated this summer by Donutchew, according to its Instagram profile.

“I’m happy to be moving in to the Vienna community!” owner Mariam said in an Instagram post from Oct. 29. “We are an Arab restaurant focusing on the gulf cuisine. Iraqi/Kuwaiti! We’re finishing up renovations and should be opening late December.”

A sneak peek of the restaurant’s menu indicates that it will serve a variety of grilled meats and seafood, along with appetizers like hummus and baba ghanoush, breakfast dishes, and some soups and desserts. Coffee, mojitos, lemonade and other drinks will also be available.

Dar Mariam will have a strong emphasis on how its food is prepared to give customers a taste of “authentic and real Middle Eastern” cuisine, owner Mariam Al-Timeemy told Northern Virginia Magazine, which first reported the planned restaurant.

According to the magazine, Al-Timeemy is starting her own restaurant after building up a loyal client base by catering in the D.C. area. She will manage the business, while her mother cooks.

Dar Mariam will join a growing array of dining establishments in Vienna from the local Arab and Middle Eastern community. Among other options, the town is home to the recently opened Lebanese restaurant Seray and the coffee shops Qamaria and 29th Parallel.
