Fairfax County police are investigating a crash that killed a pedestrian on Route 29 in Idylwood yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).
German Gomez, 87, of Falls Church was walking along westbound Route 29 near El Tio Tex-Mex Grill at Fallfax Drive when the driver of a 2020 Nissan cargo van struck him, the Fairfax County Police Department said today (Thursday) in a press release.
Police officers and emergency medical units from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the scene at approximately 4:21 p.m.
Gomez sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police say. The Nissan driver survived the crash without injuries and remained at the scene.
According to the FCPD, based on a preliminary investigation, Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives believe Gomez had “stepped out” into the westbound lanes of Route 29 when he was hit by the van driver, who was in the far-right lane.
“Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors for the driver,” the FCPD said. “The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated.”
Gomez appears to be the seventh person overall and the third pedestrian to be killed in a traffic crash in Fairfax County this year, according to preliminary data from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
The county’s first fatal pedestrian crash in 2025 was a hit-and-run on Richmond Highway in January that killed a woman who was walking with her son.
