Fairfax County to close offices, reduce services for Christmas 2025

Christmas is in the air, which means many local government services are about to wind down so their workers can take off for the holiday.

Like on Thanksgiving, municipal offices for Fairfax County and the towns of Vienna and Herndon will all be closed tomorrow and Thursday (Dec. 25) for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Fairfax City will close its government offices starting at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.

Here are other impacts to expect, including for transportation, waste collection and parks facilities:

Courts

Fairfax County’s circuit, general district and juvenile courts will all be closed through Friday (Dec. 26), so their dockets won’t resume until next Monday (Dec. 29).

The City of Fairfax General District Court isn’t hearing cases today (Tuesday), but its clerk’s office is still open during regular hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The court will then fully close starting tomorrow through Friday.

Trash and recycling

Fairfax County will not provide trash and recycling collection services on Christmas, bumping those routes to Friday. As a result, customers who typically receive pickups on Friday will need to wait until Saturday (Dec. 27) for service.

In addition, the I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex will both close at 1 p.m. tomorrow before remaining out of commission all day Thursday.

“If you use a private collector, please contact your hauler,” the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services said in a notice posted on its website yesterday (Monday).

DPWES administrative offices will close starting tomorrow and reopen at 7:30 a.m. on Friday.

Fairfax City, Vienna and Herndon will all provide regular waste collection services tomorrow, but take a day off for Christmas. In Fairfax City and Herndon, Thursday routes will be picked up on Friday instead.

Transportation

Metro will operate as usual tomorrow and on Friday, but trains will follow a “weekend late night” schedule for Christmas, running from 6 a.m. to midnight. Only Sunday bus service will be provided.

All parking at Metro lots will be free on Christmas Day.

Fairfax Connector will have regular weekday service tomorrow before providing only Sunday service on Christmas. The county bus system will also close its transit stores and customer service center on Thursday, but the call center will still be available to help riders from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Fairfax City’s CUE Bus system will end regular service early at 6:01 p.m. tomorrow, and buses won’t be in operation at all on Thursday.

As it often does for holidays that inspire a lot of travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation is lifting most highway work zones and temporary lane closures, starting at noon tomorrow until noon on Friday.

Community centers

The McLean Community Center will be closed on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, while Reston Community Center is closing only its Lake Anne facility on both days. The Hunters Woods center at 2310 Colts Neck Road will have shortened hours tomorrow, opening at 9 a.m. and closing at 1 p.m.

The Vienna Community Center is closing for both days, and no open gym hours will be provided. The Herndon Community Center will also be shut down for the entirety of Wednesday and Thursday.

Libraries, parks and recreation

Fairfax County Public Library will close all branches both tomorrow and Thursday.

All Fairfax County Park Authority facilities will be closed both days, except for its recreation centers, which will be open from 5 a.m. to noon on Christmas Eve.

In Herndon, the tennis center at Bready Park will close for both days, but the Herndon Centennial Golf Course will be available to players from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow, if the weather permits.

Fairfax City’s Historic Blenheim and the Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center in Fairfax City will both close for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
