Dozens of Centreville residents are still unable to return home almost a day after a fiery explosion possibly fueled by a natural gas leak rocked their neighborhood.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded around 9:48 p.m. yesterday (Sunday) to the 14300 block of Quail Pond Court in the Belle Pond Farm neighborhood after receiving multiple calls about “a loud explosion.”
“We’ve got multiple callers indicating that the house has completely exploded and that it’s gone,” a firefighter said on the emergency scanner.
Upon arriving, firefighters found a single-family house fully engulfed in flames. Two people — one occupant of the home on fire and a neighbor — were transported to a hospital with injuries described as minor, according to media reports.
While the exact cause of the explosion remains under investigation, emergency responders found natural gas leaking into the ground from a transmission line running through the neighborhood, WUSA9 reported.

Residents were evacuated from 50 homes on Belle Plains Drive, Buggy Whip Drive and Quail Pond Court where “critical levels” of gas were detected, FCFRD spokesperson Mitchell Clark says. As of this afternoon (Monday), the homes were still inaccessible.
“For safety reasons, the evacuation area is still closed,” Fairfax County said in an emergency blog post.
Residents who need to retrieve essential items from their homes are being asked to stop by 5101 Sequoia Farms Drive, Centreville between 5 and 6:30 p.m. today, so FCFRD personnel can escort them to their house.
“Please bring a valid ID to verify residency,” the county said. “The evacuated homes and surrounding area will not be accessible without an escort. There will be an increased police presence in the area.”
The Fairfax County Police Department is providing assistance to the fire department and has implemented the following road closures:

An investigation into the explosion has been launched by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), according to Washington Gas, which has transmission lines in the area.
“Washington Gas has been responding to the incident in Centreville, and is fully cooperating with state and federal authorities, including the NTSB, which has named Washington Gas as a party to its investigation,” the utility said in a statement. “Because of that, we are restricted from providing any information about the incident or its possible causes.”
Washington Gas directed further inquiries to the NTSB. Clark confirmed that the federal agency is now serving as the incident’s lead investigator.
Williams Pipeline Corporation, which also has a gas transmission line in the area, said it has isolated its pipeline and is continuing to monitor its system “as a precaution.”
“We are coordinating with local authorities, emergency officials and all government agencies,” a Williams spokesperson said in a statement to FFXnow. “Our thoughts are with the residents impacted by this incident, and our primary concern is the safety and well‑being of the community. The cause of the incident is still under investigation, and no additional details are available at this time.”
The county notes that residents can contact their insurance provider to see if they have displacement coverage that could help with meals, hotel stays and other costs related to their evacuation.
Ongoing updates will be provided to residents who sign up for text alerts by texting FFXIncident to 888-777.
County leaders and public safety officials will also hold two town halls tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. at the Cub Run Rec Center (4630 Stonecroft Blvd) in Chantilly, so residents can ask questions, hear updates and learn about available resources in person.
“We understand that this situation has been disruptive and stressful for many families,” the county said. “These meetings are intended to provide clarity, share accurate information and ensure residents have access to the support they need.”
