FCPD: Four killed, three injured in weekend crashes

Four people in Fairfax County were killed Saturday (March 14) between two crashes in Reston and Mount Vernon, according to police.

Among the deceased are three adults — including a 79-year-old man — and one juvenile, the Fairfax County Police Department said yesterday (Sunday).

At approximately 3:18 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Fox Mill Road and Folkstone Drive in Reston after a 2021 Toyota RAV4 left the roadway and struck a tree before bursting into flames, police said.

The driver, 25-year-old Kevin Josue Rodriguez-Lopez of Herndon, as well as two passengers — Aylin Gil Deleon, 21, of Fairfax, and an unidentified 16-year-old — were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other passengers, both adult females, were transported to a local hospital — one of which with life-threatening injuries.

Preliminarily, alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash, police said.

Later that morning, officers responded to the intersection of Mount Vernon Memorial Highway and Grist Mills Woods Way in Mount Vernon after a vehicle apparently crossed into oncoming traffic before striking another vehicle.

“Preliminarily, a 2016 Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on Mount Vernon Memorial Highway when the vehicle crossed into the westbound lanes,” the FCPD said. “The Ford Explorer then struck a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling westbound.”

The Ford Explorer driver, identified as 79-year-old Alexandria resident David Owens, was killed in the collision, police said. The driver of the Chevrolet sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, based on the initial investigation, according to police.

“Detectives are investigating whether a possible medical emergency may have contributed to the crash,” the FCPD said.

Additionally, a local 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with a Feb. 28 crash in Annandale that killed a pedestrian.

Lucas Lese of Springfield faces one misdemeanor count of failing to stop for a pedestrian. He has not been charged with any offense related to the death of the victim, such as manslaughter, according to online court records.

Police said that Lese was driving westbound on John Marr Drive in Annandale when he struck 56-year-old Sun Hyo Kim, who had been crossing the road on foot.

Kim was transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Lese was uninjured.

An initial investigation found that alcohol was not a factor in the crash, though speed “remains under investigation.” No update was provided yesterday regarding the cause of the crash.

Lese has been issued a summons to appear in court for the charge. No court date was publicly available, as of press time.
