With the weather warming up, the Tysons Community Alliance (TCA) is encouraging local residents and workers to explore the area on two wheels instead of four.

For National Bike Month, the community development organization has launched a “Tysons Trek & Treat” challenge where commuters can win prizes for traveling via bike, walking, scooter or other methods of transportation that don’t involve sitting alone in a car.

“The self-guided challenge encourages riders to visit destinations across Tysons while promoting active transportation,” the TCA said in a press release.

Registration is still open for the challenge, which began on May 1 and will continue through May 29. Participants must be at least 18 years old and live or work in Tysons.

Trips for the contest are tracked through ConnectingVA, an app created by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) to help commuters find travel options. The app lets users record their trips and earn rewards as they accumulate points.

The Tysons Trek & Treat spring challenge will award a winner every week with a Velotric Fold One Plus E-Bike, culminating with a grand prize announcement on June 11 at an upcoming COPA Tysons watch party.

In addition to an e-bike, the grand prize winner will receive a gear package with two rear rack bags, a folding lock and a voucher for a helmet as well as an $100 Experience Tysons Gift Card that can be spent at participating businesses.

Later this month, Tysons will host five pit stops for Bike to Work Day on May 15, including one supported by the TCA at Valo Park (7950 Jones Branch Drive). Other stops are planned at The Boro, Tysons Corner Center, Capital One Center and Mitre Corporation’s headquarters on Colshire Drive in Scotts Run.

“Attendees can expect refreshments, giveaways, and community engagement opportunities throughout their morning and afternoon commutes,” the TCA said.

Launched in October 2022, the TCA is dedicated to promoting Tysons and helping Fairfax County implement its vision for the area as a mixed-use urban center. It particularly focuses on collecting economic data, encouraging transportation and accessibility improvements, and organizing placemaking initiatives to shape Tysons’ identity.

To further its placemaking goals, the organization recently introduced wayfinding signs at local streets, trails and landmarks so community members can more easily navigate the rapidly developing area. Updated kiosks with maps are expected to be installed at each of the four Metro stations in Tysons sometime in June.

“These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to making Tysons a place where it’s easy and enjoyable to get around without a car,” TCA Vice President of Place and Transportation Jason Zogg said in the release. “TCA’s Bike Month programming and infrastructure investments reinforce our ongoing efforts to position Tysons as a connected, accessible, and people-friendly destination.”
