A new espresso and matcha bar, inspired by Japanese coffeehouse culture, has opened in the Town Of Vienna.
Kin Espresso Bar had its soft launch at 145 Church Street NW yesterday (Monday). Located at the rear of the commercial building, the new coffeehouse is serving specialty coffee, ceremonial matcha and desserts in an environment that focuses on hospitality.
“Kin is inspired by Japanese kissaten culture and the idea of ‘omotenashi‘ — thoughtful hospitality from the heart,” Nicole Badraa, the manager, wrote in an email. “We serve ceremonial matcha from Japan, carefully selected coffee, house-made syrups, and desserts. Our baristas are very creative and are involved in developing our menu, and we always encourage them to create new seasonal drinks.
“More than anything, we want people to leave not only with a great drink, but with a warm feeling.”
Badraa said she and owner Yuna Tsatsralt, a Fairfax County resident, chose to open the cafe in Vienna because of the “kind and welcoming” community, describing the town as “the perfect place for the kind of café we wanted to create.”
“We’re a family business, and this café is something we built together,” Badraa added. “We shared the same vision of creating a cozy space inspired by Japanese café culture, with great specialty coffee, ceremonial matcha, and thoughtful hospitality.”
Kin Espresso will be open seven days a week, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Initially, the cafe’s menu is focused on beverages, with only a limited number of pastries available when FFXnow stopped by yesterday morning.
Those offerings will likely expand with the grand opening, which is still in the works, likely coming next week, Badraa said.
This year is shaping up to be a busy one for Church Street businesses.
This summer, Sheeba Yemeni Bakery will open its first franchise in the D.C. area at 111 Church Street NW. The independent bookstore Bards Alley announced plans to move to 110 Church Street NW, just down the road from its home for the past decade at 103 Church St NE, and in August, The Bamboo Room, a mahjong social club, will open at 101 Church St NW.
