A Fairfax City police officer shot a man who was allegedly armed with a knife at Wawa shortly after midnight today (Saturday).

City of Fairfax Police officers were dispatched to the convenience store at 9700 Fairfax Blvd at around 12:07 a.m. after 911 received a call about a man wielding a knife inside the business.

The initial dispatch suggested that the man appeared to be “intoxicated” and was “swinging a knife around.”

“Upon arrival, officers encountered an individual armed with a knife just inside the front door to the business,” the City of Fairfax Police Department said in a news release. “Officers gave commands to the individual to drop the knife, but the individual did not comply and exited the business with the knife in hand.”

At some point, one of the officers shot the man with their department-issued gun. The man was transported to a hospital with injuries described as life-threatening, according to police.

No other injuries were reported to either the responding police officers or bystanders.

“In accordance with department policy, the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” Fairfax City police said. “The Northern Virginia Critical Incident Response Team will be investigating this case.”

The department said the man’s identity “will be released at a later date.”
