A motorcyclist has been hospitalized following a crash on Richmond Highway (Route 1) near Beacon Center.

Police officers and units with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, including medics, were dispatched to Richmond Highway at Memorial Street in Groveton at around 12:51 p.m. for the crash, according to scanner traffic.

The motorcyclist, an adult man, was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as life-threatening, the Fairfax County Police Department said on social media.

“The driver of the other vehicle remained on scene,” the FCPD said.

All southbound lanes on Richmond Highway were closed at the Memorial Street intersection, which is just south of Beacon Center, a shopping center anchored by Giant Food and Lowe’s Home Improvement.

An investigation by Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives is underway, according to police.

“Please use an alternate route,” the FCPD said.

Just last month, one motorcyclist was killed and another was injured in separate crashes on Richmond Highway at the Mims Street intersection in Lorton. In May, a motorcyclist was critically injured in a crash with a dump truck at Lorton Road near Gunston Plaza.

Richmond Highway has long been identified as a particularly dangerous corridor for pedestrians and cyclists. A recent report by the volunteer advocacy organization Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets found that more than 60 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed or seriously injured in crashes over the past decade.
