Five new bicycle docking stations from Capital Bikeshare will be installed in Vienna by mid-August, a first for the town.
Collectively, the docking stations will be equipped with 21 standard bicycles and four electric bicycles that can be rented and returned to any Capital Bikeshare docking station in the metro area.
The Vienna stations will be located between the W&OD Trail and Navy Federal Credit Union, at the Vienna Community Center (120 Cherry Street SE), at the intersection of Maple Avenue and Nutley Street, at 444 Maple Avenue W, as well as on Patrick Street SE near the intersection of Park Street.
The new stations will help fill in a missing piece for the service’s regional connectivity, especially given that Fairfax City and Tysons already have a number of stations, Andrew Jinks, a transportation engineer with the Town of Vienna, told FFXnow.
“The station that’s located at the intersection of Nutley and Maple was strategically placed there to have a network connection to the Vienna metro station,” Jinks said.
However, the service will also provide a new option for getting around town.
“One of the goals is to provide an alternative form of transportation within the town and instead of making a short car trip, someone could take a bike,” Jinks added.
That would be in line with local trends. Fairfax County staff have found that the typical e-bike rider uses the equipment for rides that last about 15 minutes, with a typical trip distance being about 2.2 miles.
While the project received final approvals from the Town of Vienna last July, the idea of expanding the bike rental network had been tossed around since at least 2019.
Throughout 2026, Capital Bikeshare has also significantly expanded across the Fairfax County area. In May, 27 stations were installed in Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads, Seven Corners, Belle Haven, Huntington and the Mount Vernon Trail.
Fairfax County will administer bicycle and station operations, as well as maintenance, given that a multi-jurisdictional contract with Lyft is in place, according to the town. Lyft manages the Capital Bikeshare system in eight D.C. area jurisdictions.
