Animal shelter’s Fairfax campus to temporarily close for HVAC renovations

The Fairfax County Animal Shelter’s Michael R. Frey campus in Fairfax will soon close for about six months as the Ox Road facility undergoes building improvements and HVAC system updates.

Beginning Aug. 31, services such as reunifications with a lost pet and pet pantry requests will move to the shelter’s Lorton campus (8875 Lorton Road), according to the animal shelter’s website. Animals housed by the shelter will also move to the Lorton campus. Field services, community outreach events and off-site events will not be affected by the closure.

In anticipation of the move, a “Clear the Shelters” event will be held this Friday through Sunday (Aug. 21-23). Over 100 animals will be available for adoption. All pets will have their adoption fees waived, and senior cats and dogs will also receive a $250 care credit to Pender Veterinary Centre.

“The temporary closure of the Michael R. Frey Campus marks a shift in how we’ll show up with and for the community in the months ahead,” said Thomas Fitzpatrick, communications and marketing manager for Fairfax County Animal Services. “Clear The Shelters is a strong way to kick it off, and we’re looking forward to starting this transition on a high note.”

Many animals will be available for an “adoption audition,” a short trial period during which families can take the pet home to make sure it’s a good fit for their family.

“Clear The Shelters gives our community a direct opportunity to make a difference for homeless pets at a time when we need them most,” Reasa Currier, the animal shelter’s director, said. “Every adoption creates space and resources for another animal who needs our help. As we prepare for this temporary transition, we hope families will consider opening their homes to a shelter pet.”

The urgent need for HVAC repairs at the Frey shelter was driven home by soaring temperatures during a heat wave in early July, which led staff to temporarily send some dogs to foster homes and others to the Lorton campus.
