A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a sedan on Braddock Road in the Kings Park area near Burke last Friday (Sept. 11).
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, its officers were dispatched to the intersection of Braddock and Southampton Drive at 9:11 p.m. that night for a crash involving a 2025 KTM SMCR 390 motorcycle and a 2015 Toyota Corolla.
A preliminary investigation indicated that Russell Edwards, a 45-year-old resident of Burke, was riding the motorcycle east on Braddock, approaching Southampton Drive when he crashed into the Corolla, whose driver was turning left from Braddock onto Southampton.
Edwards was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The Corolla driver remained at the scene and didn’t experience any injuries, police said.
“Speed and alcohol remain under investigation,” the FCPD said. “[Crash Reconstruction Unit] detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.”

The crash that killed Edwards was one of three critical crashes involving motorcyclists reported last week by the FCPD.
Two days earlier, around 5 p.m. on Sept. 9, an adult male motorcyclist was transported to a hospital with injuries described as life-threatening after colliding with another vehicle at Mount Vernon Highway and Battersea Lane near Woodlawn.
“The motorcyclist’s condition improved shortly after arriving at the hospital,” an FCPD spokesperson said when asked for an update yesterday (Sunday). “He is no longer in critical or life threatening condition.”
Then, around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, the FCPD said that an motorcyclist — also an adult man — had been taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition following a crash at Leesburg Pike and Rio Drive in Seven Corners.
That motorcyclist is now in “stable condition,” the police spokesperson said.
In addition, Edwards is the third person to be killed in a crash this year on Braddock Road, following a multi-vehicle crash on Feb. 6 where a driver rear-ended a police cruiser at the Prestwick Drive intersection and another fatal motorcycle crash on June 29 at the Kings Park Drive intersection.
Including those three deaths, there have been 19 fatalities on Braddock Road since the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles launched its online crash database in 2010.
