AMC Theatres finishes renovations, adds 4DX screen in Tysons

Whether they’re interested in supervillain body horror or romancing a wicker basket brought to life, moviegoers can now immerse themselves in a full sensory experience when visiting AMC Theatres at Tysons Corner Center.

The movie theater has unveiled a 4DX option as part of a multi-million-dollar overhaul that was substantially completed last Friday (Oct. 30). Under construction since March, the project added three premium large-format auditoriums, while also updating the seating, box office and MacGuffins Bar.

AMC says the goal of the renovation was to bring “a fresh look and feel to AMC Tysons Corner 16,” which hadn’t undergone comprehensive improvements since opening in September 2005.

The theater’s only previous upgrades were the addition of an IMAX-branded screen in 2010 and a conversion of another auditorium to Dolby Cinema, which promises enhanced image and sound quality. Neither of those screening rooms was included in the new renovation.

“AMC Tysons Corner 16 has long been one of the most popular moviegoing destinations in the Washington, D.C. area, which is exactly why we chose to make this significant investment in its future,” Dan Ellis, executive vice president and chief operations, development and marketing officer at AMC, said in a press release last Friday (Oct. 30).

A second auditorium has been converted to Dolby Cinema as part of the renovation, which also added 4DX at AMC and Prime at AMC rooms.

AMC unveiled its first 4DX screen at a location in Houston, Texas, in February, as it seeks to compete with other chains and increasingly sophisticated home theater set-ups by turning a trip to the cinema into a unique experience. Expected to roll out to 40 theaters in the U.S. and Europe by the end of 2027, the format features seating that moves and over 21 environmental effects, such as water sprays, snow and scents, that sync to the on-screen action.

Movies currently showing on 4DX in Tysons include the Batman villain origin story “Clayface” and “Wicker,” a fantasy-romance where Oscar winner Olivia Colman marries a man woven out of wicker played by Alexander Skarsgård.

Meanwhile, the Prime at AMC auditorium is outfitted with recliner seating, laser projection technology that provides brighter colors and sharper contrasts, and enhanced surround sound, the company says.

According to AMC’s online showtimes, the Prime room is currently screening “You Can See Everything,” filmmaker Nathan Fielder’s buzzy documentary about imprisoned Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes.

With the renovation, the theater has also installed heated recliners in all of its traditional auditoriums and refreshed the looks of its hallways, box office and MacGuffins Bar, which serves food and, for patrons 21 and older, alcohol.

The renovation project was implemented in phases over approximately seven months, allowing the theater to remain open.

“From the addition of 4DX and PRIME to a second Dolby Cinema and heated recliner seating throughout the theatre, these enhancements give moviegoers throughout Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. more premium ways than ever to experience the biggest movies on the big screen,” Ellis added.

AMC is located on Tysons Corner Center’s third floor at 1961 Chain Bridge Road Mall MAJ04.

This story initially identified “Clayface” and “Wicker” as the first movies showing in 4DX at AMC Tysons. While the overall renovation project just finished, the 4DX auditorium has actually been open for weeks, as noted by a reader who saw the Korean sci-fi movie “Hope” there.
