BREAKING: Teen critically injured in crash outside Chantilly High School

A teen has been hospitalized with critical injuries after being struck by a driver this afternoon (Wednesday) while he was walking outside Chantilly High School.

Police officers and emergency responders were dispatched to the high school in the 4100 block of Stringfellow Road at around 3:12 p.m. for the crash, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

“The pedestrian, a male teenager, was transported to the hospital in life-threatening condition,” the FCPD said on social media shortly before 4 p.m. “The driver of the vehicle remained on scene.”

Northbound Stringfellow Road has been closed to traffic as Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives investigate.

“Please use an alternate route,” the FCPD said.

There was no immediate confirmation that the pedestrian is a Chantilly student, but the crash appears to have occurred shortly after the school’s 2:55 p.m. dismissal time.

Chantilly High School is among 10 schools that saw its crossing guard coverage restored by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in September. The board had eliminated funding for public high school crossing guards as part of the fiscal year 2027 budget in response to FCPD staffing concerns, but a slew of crashes involving students early in the school year, including one that killed a bicycling Frost Middle School student, led county leaders to roll back that decision.

However, an FCPD spokesperson says there wasn’t a crossing guard present at the crash site. The student was “unfortunately” walking across the street in an area that doesn’t have a crosswalk, but does have posted signs directing pedestrians to use marked crosswalks, the spokesperson told FFXnow.

The crash appears to have occurred near the school’s northern access point, rather than the main entrance to the south, which is at an intersection with marked crosswalks and traffic lights.

The crash comes just a couple of weeks after a 15-year-old McLean High School student was struck by a driver while crossing Westmoreland Street on an electric bicycle. The teen’s injuries were described by police as non-life-threatening.

In that case, a crossing guard was in the process of setting up at the intersection where the crash occurred, and the student had used a marked crosswalk. A flashing pedestrian beacon on the side of the road where the student crossed had been out of commission since it was knocked down in a crash in late August.
