Idylwood neighborhood objects to plans for new Fairfax Water tank

Fairfax Water’s plan to update and expand the water tank that serves much of Idylwood and Pimmit Hills has run into strong opposition from many residents of the single-family neighborhood that surrounds the site.

Resident after resident testified at a Fairfax County Planning Commission public hearing last Wednesday (July 24) that replacing the existing 700,000-gallon Poplar Heights tank with the 1.25-million-gallon tank proposed by the water authority will irrevocably damage their community and quality of life.

Charges filed in fatal Huntington, Centreville pedestrian crashes

Fairfax County police have filed criminal charges in two crashes that killed pedestrians earlier this year.

A Woodbridge man was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter on Friday (July 26) in connection to a May 24 crash near the Huntington Metro Station, the Fairfax County Police Department announced yesterday (Monday).

Facing drought threat, D.C. area residents urged to conserve water

Despite some recent rain, Fairfax County is continuing to see an unusually dry summer, raising the possibility of a drought.

The entire D.C. region, including Fairfax County, has now been placed under a Drought Watch, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) announced today (Monday), urging nearly 6 million residents to conserve water as much as possible.

Tysons II owner seeks to extend use of parking lot for Cirque du Soleil

Despite the signs that popped up near the Tysons Metro station a few years ago, it doesn’t look like construction on “Tysons III” is going to start any time soon.

Tysons II property owner and developer Lerner Enterprises submitted a special permit application to Fairfax County last week seeking to extend its use of the parking lot adjacent to the Metro station for Cirque du Soleil performances through 2030.

After a successful first year, the Tysons Mixed Market is coming back for a second summer of food, crafts and art.

Organized by the Tysons Community Alliance (TCA), the market will once again bring small, local businesses and artisans to The Boro (8350 Broad Street) every Wednesday for six weeks from 4-8 p.m., starting on Aug. 21.

Sheriff’s office: Herndon woman killed in wrong-way crash in Ashburn

A 22-year-old Herndon woman was killed after driving the wrong way on an Ashburn road and crashing into another vehicle on Friday (July 26), the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) says.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Ashburn Village Road near Fultonham Circle around 10:15 p.m. for a report of a crash involving a red Honda Civic sedan and white Toyota Highlander SUV, according to the LCSO.

Fairfax County’s 4-H Fair to return to Frying Pan Farm for 74th year

The Fairfax County 4-H Fair and Carnival is ready to jump back into the frying pan — Frying Pan Farm, that is.

With carnival rides, farm animals and various family-friendly activities in tow, the 74th annual 4-H Fair will set up shop at Frying Pan Farm Park (2709 West Ox Road) in the McNair area south of Herndon from Aug. 1-4.

Fairfax County shelter pushes for older animals to get homes

Fairfax County Animal Shelter is trying to drum up some attention for its older furry occupants.

Starting today (Friday), the shelter has waived adoption fees for all dogs and cats 6 years and older as part of a “Vintage Tails” event that will continue through Sunday, July 28.

New Reston Community Center survey focuses on future of Lake Anne facility

Some Reston residents may soon get a survey about the Reston Community Center (RCC) in their mailbox.

Launched on Wednesday (July 24), the survey will be conducted by the University of Virginia’s Center for Survey Research (CSR) to gather public input on the community center’s facilities, programs and services to guide future planning.

Former GMU professor sentenced to 25 years for child pornography

A one-time assistant professor at George Mason University has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for collecting hundreds of child pornography photos and videos, including from at least two people he coerced, U.S. prosecutors announced yesterday (Thursday).

Daniel Marc Lofaro, a 40-year-old Fairfax resident, was sentenced by a U.S. District Court judge in Alexandria on Wednesday (July 24) after pleading guilty to coercion and entitlement and receiving, distributing and possessing child pornography.
