Reston Association seeks firm to assist with ‘anti-casino’ advocacy

Though the Virginia General Assembly won’t convene for another six months, Reston Association is starting to lay the groundwork for a major advocacy push.

The homeowners’ association recently issued a request for proposals seeking research and communications firms that could assist it in lobbying state lawmakers, particularly regarding the expected return of legislation to make Fairfax County eligible for a casino.

A developer is seeking to expand on the Cavalier Club apartments in Seven Corners on both sides of the Fairfax and Arlington county line.

A 110-foot-tall multi-family building with 250 apartments and 5,000 square feet of retail space has been proposed at 6200 Wilson Blvd on the Arlington County border, according to a rezoning application filed with Fairfax County on May 31.

Fairfax County tops ‘Best of NoVA’ poll for barbecue, public park and more

Northern Virginia Magazine has unveiled the results of an extensive reader poll to determine the best spots for dining, shopping and entertainment in the region.

Fairfax County establishments came out on top in several categories, claiming the region’s best barbecue, Chinese and Korean food, water park, outdoor shopping district and more, according to the annual poll. The results were published online yesterday (Monday) after first appearing in print in the magazine’s June issue.

Man arrested for multiple Dunn Loring home burglaries, police say

Fairfax County police have arrested a Maryland man who allegedly burglarized multiple homes in Dunn Loring.

The 58-year-old man was arrested following a burglary that was reported in the 7900 block of Tire Swing Road in the Shreve Hill neighborhood around 10:25 a.m. on May 24, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release.

Escalators under construction at Vienna Metro station

Work is underway to replace the escalators at the Vienna Metro station.

Started on Monday, June 3, the project will replace each of the escalators to the train platform one at a time with new escalators that are “more durable and reliable,” the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced.

Two drivers arrested after crash on I-495 injures state trooper

Two drivers were arrested this morning (Tuesday) for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in connection to a crash on I-495 in Annandale that injured a state trooper.

According to the Virginia State Police, one of its troopers was dispatched to the Capital Beltway near the exit to Little River Turnpike around 3 a.m. for a sedan that had reportedly stopped in a northbound lane.

Fairfax County Public Schools teachers and other workers have elected a union to represent them in forthcoming labor contract negotiations.

The Fairfax Education Unions (FEU), a team-up of the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers (FCFT) and the Fairfax Education Association (FEA), announced yesterday (Monday) that it will represent over 27,500 FCPS employees in their first collective bargaining effort since they secured that right in March 2023.

Police: Man exposed himself to woman at TJ Maxx in Tysons

Fairfax County police are searching for a man who allegedly exposed himself to a woman while she was shopping at TJ Maxx in Tysons last month.

Officers were dispatched to the discount clothing store at 8389 Leesburg Pike in the Pike 7 Plaza shopping center around 2 p.m. on May 25, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

“Officers learned while the victim was shopping, a male suspect followed her and exposed himself,” the FCPD said in a press release. “The suspect then fled the store before police arrival.”

The press release includes images from a surveillance camera that police say show the suspect, who is believed to be a man in his 20s.

The FCPD says anyone with information can contact its Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 3, or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Solvers by phone (1-866-411-TIPS), and online.

European fashion brand Primark to open Tysons store this summer

The fast fashion company Primark has set an opening date for its first-ever Virginia location.

The Ireland-based clothing retailer announced today that it will open a 35,000-square-foot store in Tysons Corner Center on July 16. The store will occupy a two-story space that belonged to L.L. Bean for over two decades until its closure in January 2022.

Reston Association to rethink fees, focus on facility maintenance with 2025 budget

A retooling of program fees and a renewed emphasis on facility maintenance over new capital projects will be priorities for Reston Association’s next budget.

The 2025 budget development process kicked off on May 30 with staff presenting their proposed priorities to the nonprofit community association’s Board of Directors based on the strategic plan that the board adopted in February and the results of a community survey conducted last year.
