A developer is looking to replace more than a dozen single-family houses in Woodlawn with new townhouses.

Applicant K. Hovnanian at Mount Vernon Gateway submitted the proposal to Fairfax County on Oct. 28 for 66 single family attached townhomes and 78 stacked townhomes on the 7.5-acre property at 8115 Janna Lee Avenue.

Community leaders were on-hand in Lorton late last month to break ground on the new Gunston Fire Station 20 in the Mason Neck area of Lorton.

The groundbreaking on Oct. 22 signaled the formal start of construction on the new LEED Gold-certified, 17,600 square-foot, two-story, four-bay facility, which is expected to be completed in fall 2027.

One portion of a stream restoration project running through southeastern Fairfax County is now underway, affecting operations at the Greendale Golf Course (6700 Telegraph Road) in Rose Hill until spring 2027.

Launched yesterday (Monday), the Dogue Creek Stream Restoration Project has been years in the making and will temporarily close hole 5 until March 2026, hole 6 until March 2027 and transition hole 7 from a par 5 to a par 3 until March 2026. Players are also asked not to retrieve golf balls that land in construction zones.

Emmy and Grammy Award-winning filmmaker Ken Burns unveiled his latest documentary series, “The American Revolution,” at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate on Wednesday (Oct. 29).

The filmmaker spoke in a panel discussion before sharing an outdoor preview of the new six-part series, which features George Washington and his pivotal role in winning the Revolutionary War. Episodes will air on PBS at 8 p.m. nightly from Nov. 16 to 21.

A 50-year-old man from Kingstowne suspected in a 2023 fatal hit and run in Prince William County has turned himself into law enforcement, according to Virginia State Police.

James A. Puryear was charged with involuntary manslaughter, possession with the intent to manufacture or sell a Schedule I/II substance, and felony hit and run resulting in injury or death for the crash on Nov. 19, 2023.

Inova has broken ground on its new Franconia-Springfield hospital, promising to bring full-service inpatient care to the area by 2028.

Marking the start of construction on the expansion of Inova’s HealthPlex campus, the groundbreaking at 6361 Walker Lane in Franconia was the first of two ceremonies that the health system held yesterday (Monday), along with one for the new Inova Alexandria Hospital at Landmark.

A 58-year-old tax preparer from Mount Vernon was sentenced to 18 months in prison last week for filing fake tax returns for his “unsuspecting” clients, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Lawrence Appiah-Osei pleaded guilty in June to operating the scheme from 2017 to 2020 from his Mount Vernon home, defrauding the U.S. government of more than $1.4 million, according to a release published Friday (Nov. 3) by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

A 32-year-old man from Groveton pleaded guilty on Thursday (Nov. 2) to defrauding the government of more than $1.4 million in fraudulent pandemic-related Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans and unemployment benefits.

George Mensah, Jr., 32, admitted in federal court to wire and mail fraud by collecting fees with two unnamed conspirators through CashApp, Zelle and bank transfers, according to court records. The scheme ran from Oct. 2020 to Sept. 2021, during which time Mensah admitted to preparing dozens of fake PPP loans and unemployment insurance claims under the CARES Act.
