Fairfax County Public Schools officials are open to a more robust artificial intelligence policy, but a final version is still a few months from being ready for primetime.

Staff have been working since October on a comprehensive policy governing the use of AI, an umbrella term for technology that uses computer systems to handle complex tasks. Artificial intelligence has become colloquially associated with generative tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which are trained on existing text, video and images to produce “new” content.

Superintendent Michelle Reid’s revised recommendations for new attendance boundaries were released last week ahead of a final public hearing on Thursday (Jan. 22).

Overflowing bathroom facilities and consistent mold problems are just a few of the issues making up Fairfax County Public Schools’ expansive maintenance backlog.

Maintenance and renovation needs were part of the Fairfax County School Board’s discussion of its latest draft Capital Improvement Program and a public hearing on Tuesday (Jan. 13).

FCPS anticipates construction on three new schools in proposed capital plan

Extended stay hotel in Fair Lakes could be turned into apartments

A New York investment firm wants to convert an extended stay hotel in the Fair Lakes area into housing.

Churchwick Partners submitted a rezoning application to Fairfax County on Dec. 21 for the existing Sonesta Extended Stay Suites at 12811 Fair Lakes Parkway.

Temporary padel courts approved for office parking lot in Tysons

A growing sport is getting a temporary home in Tysons, bringing new life to a parking lot that’s been slated for redevelopment for more than a decade.

Earlier this month (Dec. 3), the Fairfax County Planning Commission unanimously approved a development plan amendment to allow six outdoor padel ball courts on surface parking for the Greensboro Park offices at 8200 Greensboro Drive.

Planned Lake Barcroft independent living complex lands financing

An affordable independent living complex planned in the Lake Barcroft area near Falls Church has secured key financing to move forward.

At its meeting on Dec. 9, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously authorized the county’s Redevelopment and Housing Authority to issue $16 million in tax-exempt bonds for the $51.6 million Kindred Crossing project.

Fairfax County leaders approve labor contract for government workers

Fairfax County has committed to funding its responsibilities to employees under a collective bargaining agreement.

At its meeting on Tuesday (Dec. 9), the Board of Supervisors voted 8-1 to approve a resolution committing to funding obligations under the agreement with the Fairfax County Government Employees Union.

Fairfax County proposes updates to tree species recommended for developers

As Christmas trees start popping up throughout the region, Fairfax County is wrapping up a multiyear effort to revise regulations around trees used by developers.

At a meeting of the Board of Supervisors’ environmental committee on Nov. 25, county officials provided an update on proposed changes to the tree planting recommendations in its public facilities manual.
