Housing advocates used last week’s Fairfax County budget hearings to press for local leaders to turn their affordable housing aspirations into reality through increased funding.
“The market on its own … is not building near enough affordable homes,” said Reston resident John Dister, one of several housing advocates to address the Board of Supervisors on April 15, one of three days of public hearings on the fiscal year 2027 budget.

The 500-acre estate, which served as Washington’s home before and after his presidency, is gearing up for warmer weather for the first time since reopening the centerpiece mansion in December after a two-year renovation project.
For nearly three decades, one event has united Fort Belvoir’s sprawling community of soldiers, families, retirees and civilian employees like no other: Oktoberfest. This September, the tradition continues — and grows — with the 28th Annual Fort Belvoir Oktoberfest, running September 24–27 at a brand-new location, Pullen Field, 9625 Middleton Road, Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Hosted by Fort Belvoir Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), the four-day festival is the installation’s largest annual event and one of the most beloved in the Northern Virginia military community. Best of all? General admission is free — no tickets required to walk through the gates and enjoy four days of German tradition.
Whether you’re a polka devotee, a carnival enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates a good bratwurst, the schedule has you covered. The fest kicks off Thursday, September 24 (6–10 p.m.) with live performances from the Fritz Polka Band and the Sepp Walzer Fest Band. Friday (4–11 p.m.) brings an expanded lineup, including a captivating performance by the Alt-Washingtonia Schuhplattler Verein, a traditional German folk dance group, alongside more live music and DJ sets.
Saturday (noon–11 p.m.) is the festival’s longest day, featuring a full rotation of performers including Johnny Koenig and Leroy Burks, plus special contests (more on those below). The celebration wraps up on Sunday, September 27 — Military Appreciation Day (noon–8 p.m.) — with a fitting send-off honoring the men and women who make this community what it is. All Active Duty Military and their dependents can purchase a carnival wristband for $27. Must present valid Active Duty Military ID Card for discounted wristband.
Longtime attendees will notice a few exciting additions in 2026. The festival is making its debut at Pullen Field, adjacent to the Bowling Center — a new venue that opens up even more options for a full day out, including bowling and American cuisine for anyone looking for a break from the German revelry.
The crowd-favorite Stein Holding Contest (ages 18+) and Costume Contest (all ages, with Dirndl & Lederhosen and Kinder categories) return on both Saturday and Sunday inside the fest tent. And in a thoughtful new addition, the event will feature a dedicated sensory area for families who need a quieter moment away from the excitement — a small but meaningful touch that reflects MWR’s commitment to serving the whole community.
Authentic German cuisine, specialty food trucks, beer on tap, and Oktoberfest merchandise — including Bavarian mugs, glass boots and traditional hats — round out the experience. Carnival rides are available for a separate ticket fee, purchased on-site.
The event is open to active duty personnel, retirees, civilian federal employees and their guests. Parking is free and in lots surrounding the event. Members of the general public may attend as sponsored guests. Because the festival is held on the installation, all visitors must plan for gate access in advance. Non-DoD ID holders aged 18 and older need a sponsored visitor pass and should submit their applications at least 72 hours before arriving. Innovation Station Development Breaks Ground — “After several years of planning, the mixed-use Rivana project at the Innovation Center Metro station has broken ground. Developers and Loudoun County officials gathered Monday to kick off the construction of the project,” which will deliver 3.5 million square feet of office space, 3,700 residential units and 500 hotel rooms on a 103-acre site on the Loudoun/Fairfax border. Va. Set to Offer Paid Leave Programs — “After years of trying, Democrats in Virginia’s legislature passed bills that will create two new state benefit programs: paid family leave and paid sick leave. Both work similar to the Commonwealth’s unemployment program, guaranteeing paid time off when an emergency strikes. But the programs aren’t free.” [WVTF]
Fairfax Station Gas Station Burglarized — “On April 6, at approximately 6:03 a.m., officers responded to an Exxon gas station at 8965 Village Shops Drive in Fairfax Station for a reported burglary. An employee arrived to open the business and discovered the front door had been smashed.” Security footage showed that a man had broken the door “with a rock” around 12:40 a.m. and stole cigarettes and alcohol, police say. New Bank Branch Open in Tysons — “Freedom Financial Holdings, Inc. has relocated its corporate offices and The Freedom Bank of Virginia has opened a new branch co-located in the heart of Tysons Corner at 1750 Tysons Blvd., McLean. The milestone continues the bank’s growth and long-term investment in Northern Virginia during its 25th anniversary, Freedom Financial said in a news release.” [Inside NoVA]
Fairfax City Residents Weigh In on Budget — “Fairfax City officials used an April 16 public engagement meeting to gather feedback on the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget, with participants ranking schools, infrastructure and public safety among the highest priorities and showing little support for reducing existing services.” [Patch]
Awareness of Gun Seizure Law Growing — “Since the ‘Red Flag’ law went into effect on July 1, 2020, Fairfax County said it has processed 481 Emergency Substantial Risk cases and temporarily taken away 947 guns … The Northern Virginia suburb has seen a significant increase in cases in the last few years, which Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano suspects is the result of more people becoming aware of the law.” [WTOP]
Annandale Residents Clean Up for Earth Day — “The Hillbrook-Tall Oaks community is a lot nicer, since the Annandale neighborhood held an Earth Day cleanup on April 18. Thirty-one dedicated volunteers … collected 24 bags of trash and recyclables from neighborhood streets and the grounds of Poe Middle School.” [Annandale Today]
Deadline for Lake Anne Signage Comments — The presentation and video from last week’s meeting on a proposed concept for a new logo and signs identifying Lake Anne Plaza in Reston are now online. Registration is now open for the sixth annual Tour de Hunter Mill community bicycle ride set for Sunday, May 3. Participants can choose between riding two scenic routes — 11 or 19 miles — designed to accommodate both beginners and experienced cyclists.

A Fairfax High School student will serve more than four months in jail for reportedly groping multiple girls in the school’s halls.
