Fifty-one artists will be featured in the ‘Scapes exhibit at the Falls Church Arts gallery from October 8 through November 12. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 8, at 7:30 pm. Artists will be on hand to share their processes and inspirations. Juror and internationally renowned landscape artist Bryan Jernigan will speak about the jurying process. This event is free and open to the public.

During fall bird migration, which is peaking from now until November 3in the Fairfax County area, hundreds of millions of birds are expected to fly overhead. Did you know that artificial light–whether from tall buildings or residences– attracts and disorients migrating birds, confusing and exhausting them as well as making them vulnerable to collisions with buildings? Hundreds of millions of birds die in collisions with buildings annually, including many species of high conservation concern.
Turning off or dimming non-essential lighting during critical migration periods drastically reduces bird deaths. Type your town’s name into BirdCast’s local migration alert tool to see how many birds are expected to fly over your area on any given night. If the tool indicates migration is expected to be “High,” please consider turning off any nonessential lights that would be visible to birds, including outdoor lights and those in tall office buildings.

The 2022 Falls Church Arts “Scenes in the City” Plein Air Festival is underway. Artists from the local area as well as those who choose to travel from a distance, in this case as far away as New York, can be spotted at scenic areas throughout the Little City painting en plein air, or outside. This type of painting must be done quickly and on site to capture the ever-changing light. Popular locations in the past have been the W&OD trail, local parks, the farmhouse at Cherry Hill Park, Clare and Don’s Beach Shack, and the Farmer’s Market. If interested, please feel free to join the artists as they compete to capture the history, architecture, and natural beauty of Falls Church in their paintings. Artists will continue to paint daily until the morning of the festival.
Artists may register for the event at https://fallschurcharts.org. To be considered for the competition, participating artists must visit Falls Church Arts gallery or Art and Frame of Falls Church during their open hours, to have their papers or canvases stamped. Works will be on display at Falls Church City Hall grounds, 300 Park Avenue, Falls Church, starting between 8 and 9 am, until noon on Saturday, September 24. The festival will also include a Quick Draw Competition from 8 am to 11 am. During this competition, artists will start and complete a work of art in just three hours.
