Two drivers were arrested this morning (Tuesday) for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in connection to a crash on I-495 in Annandale that injured a state trooper.

According to the Virginia State Police, one of its troopers was dispatched to the Capital Beltway near the exit to Little River Turnpike around 3 a.m. for a sedan that had reportedly stopped in a northbound lane.

A six-floor office building in Annandale could grow two stories taller and add about 50 housing units under a new development plan.

Located at 7620 Little River Turnpike, the office building eyed for residential conversion by Alexandria-based Nicholas Development was built in 1971 and is now “largely vacant and out-of-date,” according to rezoning application materials dated May 28. The building is apparently just 8% occupied.

News that the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) will eliminate the Kendale Woods Park pickleball courts came as a complete surprise to Sarah Wysocki.

An Annandale resident whose house backs up to the park, Wysocki says she and other neighbors first learned about the plan to renovate the courts in June from Annandale Today, which shared the FCPA’s announcement on May 3.

Police are officially investigating a multi-vehicle crash that occurred in Falls Church this past April, which resulted in the city’s first crash-related fatality since 2010.

According to authorities, at approximately 12:17 p.m. on April 18, 89-year-old Annandale resident Barrick Tibbet’s 2001 Honda Accord collided with a trailer stopped at a red light in the 200 block of N. Washington Street. The trailer was being towed by a truck at the time of the incident.

(Updated at 10:05 a.m.) A now-former Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) deputy was arrested earlier this week for allegedly assaulting a person being booked into the county jail in January.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, Nicholas Vaszil, a 28-year-old Annandale resident, “assaulted an inmate” in the booking area of the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on around 3:45 a.m. on Jan. 1 “following a verbal altercation.”

The days of pickleball at Annandale’s Kendale Woods Park are coming to an end.

In response to noise complaints from neighboring residents, the Fairfax County Park Authority will remove the pickleball lines from the park’s two racquetball courts, turning them back into tennis-only facilities.

A new art exhibition aims to change the way people see some of their daily spaces around the Annandale area.

The exhibition, called Art in Daily Spaces, is sponsored by ArtsFairfax and over the next month a variety of local shops and government buildings will be transformed into impromptu art galleries.

Fairfax County is gearing up for the return of its 10 farmers’ markets this spring, with some locations set to return later this month and others in May.

The 2024 season starts on April 17 with the McCutcheon/Mount Vernon Farmers Market outside the Sherwood Regional Library (2501 Sherwood Hall Lane), the Fairfax County Park Authority announced last week.

(Updated at 9:40 a.m. on 3/26/2024) A federal funding boost is coming to help improve pedestrian and bicycle facilities on the Town of Herndon’s main through street and more than a dozen other sites around Northern Virginia.

At its meeting last Thursday (March 21), the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) approved $19.5 million through the federal Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program for 15 non-highway transportation projects in the state.

A man who sexually assaulted two women in the Annandale area on consecutive days last week is now in custody, police say.

Kevin Lopez Altan, 24, of Annandale was arrested on Friday (March 22) after allegedly raping a business owner multiple times two days earlier and separately attacking a Northern Virginia Community College student the previous day, the Fairfax County Police Department announced this afternoon (Monday).
