Fairfax County police have made headway on a months-long investigation into over a dozen thefts targeting local liquor stores.
Detectives believe the crimes were all committed by the same “crew,” identifying a man arrested in Alexandria and three juvenile individuals as suspects, though others may also be involved, the Fairfax County Police Department said yesterday (Monday) in a news release.

Fairfax County police have arrested a special education teacher at White Oak Elementary School in Burke for assaulting multiple students.
On April 12, Child Protective Services received a referral that a teacher was seen assaulting a student at school, police said in a Saturday news release.
Detectives took on the case and determined that between September 2023 and this April, Elizabeth Yoshimi Nagagata, 62, of Fairfax allegedly assaulted three students on separate occasions, the release said.
On Friday, Nagagata was arrested and charged with seven counts of simple assault. Nagagata was held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Detectives would like to speak with anyone who may have information about this case or others possibly related. Those with information are asked to please call the Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 4.

A 68-year-old Springfield man has been charged in connection to a fatal crash that killed a motorcyclist near Burke’s Rolling Valley shopping center this spring.
The Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Friday) that the driver was charged with failing to yield the right of way after he allegedly crashed into the motorcyclist while trying to turn left out of the shopping center onto Old Keene Mill Road on April 25.

Police say a Loudoun County man was behind three sexual assault and exposure cases that all occurred in Fairfax County at least two decades ago.
According to the Fairfax County Police Department, detectives used DNA to identify Edward Eugene Pottmyer, 58, of Chantilly as the suspect in a 1998 sexual assault in Fair Lakes, a 2000 assault in the Penderbrook area and a 2004 exposure incident in Burke.

Two people, including a 73-year-old Burke resident, were killed yesterday (Sunday) when their plane crashed in central Virginia, police say.
According to the Virginia State Police, the sheriff’s office in Fluvanna County got a 911 call at 8:54 a.m. from residents of Palmyra who reported seeing a “low-flying plane,” followed by “what sounded like an explosion.”

(Updated at 8:25 p.m.) A motorcyclist was killed last night (Wednesday) in a two-vehicle crash just outside the Rolling Valley shopping mall in Burke, police say.
Officers and a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue medic were dispatched to the intersection of Old Keene Mill Road and Shiplett Blvd around 10:05 p.m. for a crash involving a motorcycle and car, according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.

Fairfax County is gearing up for the return of its 10 farmers’ markets this spring, with some locations set to return later this month and others in May.
The 2024 season starts on April 17 with the McCutcheon/Mount Vernon Farmers Market outside the Sherwood Regional Library (2501 Sherwood Hall Lane), the Fairfax County Park Authority announced last week.

(Updated at 3:55 p.m.) A local bald eagle stretched its wings for the first time in over a month when it got released at Burke Lake Park this past weekend.
The adult, male bird was found in Fairfax Station on Dec. 23 by Fairfax County Animal Protection Police officers, who were responding to a call for service. In addition to being “underweight,” the eagle had head injuries and “a deep laceration on a leg,” according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Updated at 8 p.m. on 2/7/2024 — A third person — Yan Zhou, 68, of Burke — has died as a result of Sunday’s crash at the Braddock Road and Bradfield Drive intersection in Burke, police said. There have now been five deaths from vehicle crashes in Fairfax County this year.
Updated at 4:55 p.m. on 2/6/2024 — One of the two people hospitalized with serious injuries from Sunday’s crash on Braddock Road has died, bringing Fairfax County’s traffic death toll for the year up to four people, police announced today (Tuesday).

A rehabilitation center in Burke wants to expand, and it’s asking Fairfax County to approve its plan.
In an effort to “improve its ability to serve the Northern Virginia area,” the Burke Health and Rehabilitation Center submitted an application to the county on Jan. 16 requesting a rezoning and an amendment that would allow an addition, a statement of justification reads.
