A man who kicked off this week with a 21-hour standoff with police in Bailey’s Crossroads is facing assault and abduction charges.

Additional charges are possible against Brian Ramos, 21, for his killing of a cat during the barricade, which began shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 10) and concluded after 1 p.m. yesterday (Monday), the Fairfax County Police Department said.

As previously reported, police were called to the 6000 block of Bellview Drive in Culmore’s Olde Salem Village apartment complex at 3:52 p.m. for a report of a person being assaulted with a baseball bat.

“Two victims were abducted by a roommate [and] then one victim was assaulted with a baseball bat,” the FCPD said in a news release. “The victims were able to escape the apartment and call the police.”

When officers arrived, Ramos had barricaded himself alone in the apartment with his cat and a knife, which he threatened to use, according to police.

The situation remained unchanged until around 12:20 a.m., when officers saw Ramos start a fire inside the apartment, the FCPD said. He then “fatally harmed the cat and proceeded to exit his apartment and climb to the roof.”

It’s unclear exactly how the standoff was resolved, but the FCPD says Ramos eventually climbed off the roof using a ladder provided by the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Police announced at 1:11 p.m. yesterday that he had been taken into custody.

The person who got assaulted with a baseball bat — identified by police as a roommate of Ramos — was treated for minor injuries.

After getting taken to a hospital for evaluation, Ramos was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he remains without bond.

Ramos has been charged with two counts each of assault and abduction. In addition to the possible charges for the cat’s death, the FCPD says a potential arson charge is pending.

“Officers from our Crisis Negotiation Team & our Special [Operations] Division worked throughout a very cold two days to safely take this man into custody,” FCPD communications director Katherine Hayek said in a tweet. “Some incredible work, taking advantage of time & space, and great tactics, brought this scary situation to a peaceful end.”

Fairfax County police officers are searching the Culmore area for a man who reportedly shot a person near the 7-Eleven on Glen Carlyn Drive.

The victim has been transported to a hospital with serious injuries, the Fairfax County Police Department said just before 2 p.m.

At 1:06 p.m., a dispatcher directed officers to the convenience store at 3337 Glen Carlyn Drive for a shooting “that just occurred,” according to scanner traffic. Officers reported that a man believed to be the suspect was last seen running on foot toward Glen Carlyn and Bellview Drive.

The suspect may be armed with a pistol, an officer said. He was described as wearing a blue sweater and dark pants.

The FCPD says anyone with information about the incident should call 911.

This is now the third shooting on Glen Carlyn Drive around the Culmore shopping center in 2023, following ones on Jan. 5 and April 17. The area was also targeted by a series of robberies in March.

(Updated at 5:05 p.m. on 4/18/2023) A 14-year-old teenager was shot near the Culmore shopping center.

Fairfax County police were dispatched to the intersection of Bellview Drive and Glen Carlyn Drive at 5:23 p.m., according to scanner traffic from Open MHz.

Scanner traffic indicated that one person sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. The boy was transported to a hospital for his injuries, which may be life-threatening, the Fairfax County Police Department said.

Two other teenagers were seen running down Bellview towards Glenmore Drive, according to police.

“Preliminarily, detectives believe that two suspects are known to the victim,” the FCPD said in a news release. “The victim was shot multiple times.”

A dispatcher reported that there were several callers saying they have teenagers “that were shot at but not hit.” An officer on the scene said they had recovered a gun that the person who got shot reportedly “was waving around.”

Police established a perimeter across Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) in the hopes of trapping the suspects. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene. The FCPD advised avoiding the area.

This appears to be the second shooting in the Culmore area this year. Two people were hospitalized after getting shot on Glen Carlyn Drive on Jan. 5.
