Unresolved issues ranging from traffic and pedestrian safety to parks, schools and overall density led the Fairfax County Planning Commission to defer action on Wednesday (Feb. 26) on a key step toward the redevelopment of the former AT&T site in Oakton.

The 33-acre parcel at the intersection of Chain Bridge Road (Route 123) and Jermantown Road is one of several contiguous plots of land expected to be redeveloped in coming years as part of the 110-acre Flint Hill Suburban Center planning district.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved two redevelopment proposals on Tuesday (Feb. 18) that will turn areas in and around the Flint Hill Office Park near Jermantown Road in Oakton into residential communities.

The proposals to redevelop Redwood Plaza (10600 Arrowhead Drive) and a portion of the Flint Hill Office Park (10530 Rosehaven Street) were both approved unanimously.

The corner of Maple Avenue and Nutley Street where the Vienna Wolf Trap Hotel and Tequila Grande continues to lie fallow, but the developer hoping to revitalize the site is at least working to make it more presentable.

Hekemian & Company and its civil engineering firm Walter L. Phillips got the Vienna Board of Architectural Review’s (BAR) approval on Jan. 16 to maintain a chain-link fence around the 2.8-acre property at 444 Maple Avenue West through the end of this year.


Countywide

The window has closed for developers, property owners and other community members to nominate sites in Fairfax County for future redevelopment.

The county received about 50 nominations during its Site-Specific Plan Amendment (SSPA) process, which lets members of the public propose changes to the comprehensive plan that guides future land use and development. The submission period lasted from Jan. 13 through last Thursday, Feb. 13.


Countywide

The legislation to make Fairfax County eligible for a casino isn’t officially dead, but it appears to be in active need of resuscitation.

A House of Delegates appropriations subcommittee’s decision to pass by Senate Bill 982 after a 30-minute hearing on Wednesday (Feb. 12) brought celebratory statements from the community groups and local elected officials who had vocally opposed the proposal to allow a casino in Tysons.

A group of local developers is looking to transform the long-unused barn at Mount Vernon’s Grist Mill Park into a restaurant and live music venue.

The unsolicited proposal was submitted by Long & Foster realtors Mark and Michael White, Tech24 Construction CEO and President Victor Bonomi, and First Washington Realty senior construction director Daniel Wiechert.

A contractor based at Reston Town Center is angling to take over an office building near Herndon whose former occupant is also now based in Reston Town Center.

Peraton, a national security and technology company started in 2017, plans to open a new campus at Woodland Pointe, a 6.77-acre office complex just south of Dulles Toll Road that previously served as Volkswagen’s North American headquarters.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors took less than 10 minutes on Tuesday (Feb. 4) to approve land-use changes allowing for a continuing-care facility along Route 7 in the Reston/Great Falls area.

The proposal by Silverstone Senior Living calls for up to 130 units — a mix of independent-living and assisted-living options — on the 22.5-acre parcel at 10819 Leesburg Pike, across from Riva Ridge Road and west of Baron Cameron Avenue.
