Fairfax County elected officials seem in alignment on their top priority for the 2026 Virginia General Assembly session.

“Number one is always K-12 education funding,” Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay said at the annual legislative public hearing, held Saturday (Jan. 10) at the Fairfax County Government Center.

The blitz of special elections facing Fairfax County voters to start 2026 is ramping up this week, with the ballot for the Braddock District School Board seat now solidified and voting opening or in progress in three state-level contests.

Democratic voters in the Braddock District have chosen Tom Dannan, a local business owner and Terra Centre resident, as their preferred candidate to succeed Rachna Sizemore Heizer, who vacated the district’s Fairfax County School Board seat in December to serve as its new supervisor.

Two candidates seeking to be the Fairfax County School Board’s next Braddock District representative made their cases to local Democrats in an online forum on Monday (Jan. 5) ahead of this weekend’s endorsement caucus.

Both Tom Dannan and Alexa Krezel are vying to succeed Rachna Sizemore Heizer, who was elected to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors late last year.

Braddock District Democrats will meet this weekend to determine their favored candidate for a vacant school board seat.

Though school board seats are non-partisan, local political parties can endorse a candidate. With two people running to represent the district on the Fairfax County School Board, the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC) will let voters to decide who receives its backing.

If the Fairfax County School Board has its way, a new Braddock District representative will be in place by the end of the current academic year.

In accordance with Virginia law, the remaining board members yesterday (Thursday) petitioned the Fairfax County Circuit Court to schedule the special election to replace Rachna Sizemore Heizer, who was elected earlier this month as the county’s new Braddock District supervisor.

Fairfax County Public Schools officials are starting to close in on a name for the new high school expected to open in the Floris area south of Herndon next year.

The Fairfax County School Board will hold a public hearing at its meeting tonight (Thursday) to accept community feedback on potential names recommended earlier this month by FCPS Superintendent Michelle Reid.

Rising ninth- and 10th-graders from a wide swath of western Fairfax County will have the opportunity to attend the county’s newest high school starting next fall.

Fairfax County School Board members voted last Thursday (Nov. 13) to allow students who otherwise would attend Centreville, Chantilly, Westfield, Oakton or South Lakes high schools to instead join the first classes at the currently unnamed new high school.
