Fairfax County supervisors on Tuesday (April 14) unanimously approved the plan to build a new Penn Daw Fire Station, supportive housing and an emergency shelter facility on a 3.5-acre tract just east of Richmond Highway.
The approval marks a significant step forward in a capital project that has been in the works for more than a decade.
Fairfax County Planning Commission members gave their unanimous support on March 25 to a planned relocation of the Penn Daw Fire Station to a parcel that will also include supportive housing and an emergency shelter.
The plan, which will be considered by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on April 14, would put the new fire station and housing on a 3.5-acre site at 2801 Beacon Hill Road, one block east of Richmond Highway.
Community leaders were on-hand in Lorton late last month to break ground on the new Gunston Fire Station 20 in the Mason Neck area of Lorton.
The groundbreaking on Oct. 22 signaled the formal start of construction on the new LEED Gold-certified, 17,600 square-foot, two-story, four-bay facility, which is expected to be completed in fall 2027.
Fairfax County could be moving forward soon with the rezoning of the outdated Penn Daw Fire Station.
The plan is to replace the current facility off Route 1 at 2801 Beacon Hill Road with a new mix of fire station, emergency shelter and supportive housing.

Though the project’s timing and final price tag still need to be pinned down, progress is being made and details will soon emerge, a representative of the architect told the Fairfax City Council at an April 22 meeting.
