A malfunctioning battery pack has been ruled as the cause of a townhouse fire in the Frying Pan area of Fairfax County.

Fire officials say that the fire, which happened on Saturday (June 18) around 9:30 a.m., started in the third-floor bedroom of the townhouse on the 13000 block of Rose Petal Circle. A charging lithium-ion battery pack was to blame.

After a brief hiatus due to the pandemic, the Town of Herndon is looking ahead to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks, activities and entertainment.

The town’s July 4 celebration, which is set for 6:30-10 p.m. that Monday, will feature live entertainment by Hipshack, a band that will perform party songs and modern hits. Fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m.

Lerner Enterprises has tweaked some elements of Parkview, a massive, mixed-use project at the door of the Herndon-Monroe Metro Station.

The developer plans to build three mixed-use buildings on a nearly 5-acre site at 593 Herndon Parkway. Plans were already pared down significantly over previous proposals, which maxed out on the maximum allowable density for the areas.

A new smoothie shop is slated to arrive at Herndon’s Franklin Farm Village Center.

According to storefront signage, the national chain Tropical Smoothie Cafe will take up space at 13344 Franklin Farm Road in Herndon.

The neighborhood is constrained by limited curbside parking, limited space for emergency vehicles, sight line issues, and trash and litter, according to residents. They also say they’ve had trouble getting town services like trash, recycling, and snow and leaf removal.

Local police are investigating a shooting that happened in Herndon over the weekend.

One individual was shot in the 1000 block of Elden Street early yesterday (Sunday) morning, according to the Herndon Police Department. The individual was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Reston Hospital.

The team behind more than 2.3 million square feet of development at Arrowbrook Centre in Herndon is poised to make some big changes to the massive mixed-use neighborhood near the Herndon Metro Station.

Property owner Arrowbrook Centre LLC — a subsidary of the Ruth and Hal Landers Charitable Trust — and developer Pulte Home Company hope to shuffle several previously approved buildings, consolidate residential buildings and eliminate certain aspects of the plan.

Down the road, Herndon residents may not have to travel as far to access services by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The Herndon Town Council is exploring the possibility of bringing permanent DMV services to the town — an initiative that was broadly discussed at the council’s quarterly strategy meeting late last month.
