With the autumnal equinox now in the rearview mirror, the Mosaic Fall Festival is waiting to sweep back into Merrifield.

The annual seasonal celebration will bring food, music and animals to the Mosaic District this weekend (Sept. 28-29) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

The D.C. Shorts International Film Festival is coming back to Merrifield.

The four-day festival will kick off its 21st year this Thursday (Sept. 5) with an afternoon of movie screenings and a welcome party at Crescendo Studios, a music school at 8101-A Route 29 that features a recording studio, a Black Box typically used for concerts and other event spaces.

Te’Amo Boba Bar is now serving tea, along with other sweet treats, at the Mosaic District in Merrifield.

The boba tea cafe chain had a soft opening at 8190 Strawberry Lane, Suite 5, on Monday (Aug. 19), making the Merrifield location its first outside of the Chicago, Illinois, area where it originated in 2018.

Dunn Loring Center in Merrifield has been quiet since Fairfax County approved a redevelopment of the 1980s-era office building more than three years ago.

Rest assured, though, that the planned apartment building with retail is still in the works, says property owner and developer Elm Street Development, which hopes to start construction at 2722 Merrilee Drive in 2025.

Chicago’s Te’Amo Boba Bar is venturing to the East Coast for the first time with a cafe at the Mosaic District in Merrifield, where it’ll open at 8190 Strawberry Lane, Suite 5, next to Pastry Xpo on the ground floor of the Vantage Apartments.

A truck carrying metal debris crashed on Nutley Street near the Pan Am Shopping Center in Merrifield this morning (Tuesday), requiring an extended closure for clean-up.

Fairfax County police officers and Fire and Rescue units, including a hazmat team, were dispatched to Nutley Street at Route 29 around 11:20 a.m. for a report of a flipped tractor-trailer, according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.

The Mosaic District’s food scene is getting a shake-up.

First, Kreole Seafood and Cocktails permanently closed after July 14, less than a year after introducing its Creole-meets-Asian concept. Then, the Florida donut bakery, The Salty Donut, announced yesterday (Monday) that it will open its first Virginia location in the Merrifield neighborhood.

When the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) handed out its annual awards celebrating the D.C. region’s food industry last night (Sunday), the winners included two restaurants that can be found in Fairfax County.

Fava Pot, an Egyptian restaurant in West Falls Church, won an award for Favorite Fast Bites, while Colada Shop, a Caribbean spot with a location in Merrifield’s Mosaic District, was named the area’s Hottest Sandwich Shop at the 42nd Annual RAMMYS Awards Gala, which was held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in D.C.

One of the best brews in the country can be found right in Fairfax County at Caboose Brewing Company, according to the judges of the 2024 U.S. Open Beer Championship.

The brewery, which owns and operates Caboose Tavern (520 Mill Street) in Vienna and Caboose Commons (2918 Eskridge Road) near the Mosaic District in Merrifield, won a gold medal at the national competition, which announced winners in dozens of categories on July 9.

Two teens were arrested in Albemarle County last week in connection to an armed carjacking reported near the Silver Diner in Merrifield.

Officers were dispatched to the 8100 block of Porter Road around 6 a.m. for a robbery after a man called 911, stating that his black Toyota Camry had been stolen, according to the police scanner on Open MHz.
