A new relief fund has emerged to supplement the patchwork of GoFundMe pages and meal trains created to support the families of those who died in last week’s airplane and helicopter crash into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport.

The Capital Area Community Foundations, a partnership of D.C.-area nonprofits that includes the Oakton-based Community Foundation for Northern Virginia, launched a DCA Together Relief Fund on Friday (Jan. 31) to raise money for the families, first responders and organizations providing mental health services and other recovery resources.

With its current home being eyed for redevelopment, Pathway Homes is using its expected future displacement as an opportunity to reimagine its headquarters.

The nonprofit, which provides housing and other support services to adults with serious mental illnesses and disabilities, announced yesterday (Tuesday) that it has acquired a three-story office building at 4010 University Drive in Fairfax City.

The family of a Springfield man who was recently killed in a plane crash will also bury the ashes of one of the dogs he was transporting.

The family of Seuk Kim, 49, went to Leesburg on Sunday (Dec. 1) to pick up the ashes of a puppy named Lisa, who died alongside Kim when his 1986 Mooney M20J crashed in the Catskill Mountains about 35 miles southwest of Albany, New York, on Nov. 24.

The cafe will raise funds for World Central Kitchen (WCK), a nonprofit organization that provides free meals to people experiencing crises, from natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic to the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.

For Ebony Belt, the founder of Maryland-based nonprofit Divine by Design, success is serving disadvantaged youth by being the person she needed when she was growing up – especially when it comes to the mental health of young women.

Now, with intentions to partner with the nonprofit United Community by the end of this year, Belt hopes to bring Divine by Design’s mentoring, counseling and community service to Fairfax County.

The Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) has begun operations at its newly expanded Northern Virginia Distribution Center.

After more than a year of construction, the nonprofit unveiled the 43,000-square-foot warehouse in Newington with a ribbon-cutting ceremony last Thursday (Sept. 26), celebrating the facility as a critical step forward in its ability to help feed people across the D.C. area.

If you nearly get swiped by a turning car while walking across a street in Fairfax County, there’s a good chance that you or another community member has had a similar experience in that same spot before, newly released survey data indicates.

The inaugural “Near Miss/Dangerous Location” summary report from the Fairfax chapter of Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets (NOVA FSS) found that 90% of the incidents recorded by pedestrians and cyclists since 2020 were recurring events — a higher rate than in Arlington (82%) or Alexandria (74%), the two other jurisdictions analyzed by the volunteer-run nonprofit.
