McLean Central Park has reopened to the public following a major revitalization project nearly two years in the making.

The upgrades include modernized playgrounds, a new pavilion, improved walkways and enhanced green spaces. While the Fairfax County Parking Authority is still finalizing a new donor wall, a grand reopening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. this Saturday (Dec. 7).

Fairfax City is stepping up surveillance of its historic downtown and two public parks with the help of private security guards.

Starting today (Monday), uniformed but unarmed guards will patrol the Old Town commercial district, Stafford Drive Park (3300 Stafford Drive) and Draper Drive Park (9797 Beech Drive) as part of an eight-week security pilot program developed by the City of Fairfax Police Department.

New interpretative signs are headed to Riverbend Park in Great Falls and Ellanor C. Lawrence Park in Chantilly next month as part of an initiative to promote poetry in Fairfax County’s park system.

Set to be unveiled next Friday, Nov. 1, the signs will showcase poems selected by outgoing Fairfax County Poet Laureate Danielle Badra for both of the locations.

Reston’s Hunters Woods ballfield was officially rededicated as a park on Friday (Oct. 4).

Reston Association marked the underutilized baseball diamond’s transformation into a community park with staff, residents and county officials. The association completed the project in November 2023.

The Town of Herndon’s new indoor tennis facility is back in business.

The indoor tennis center at Bready Park (814 Ferndale Avenue), which officially opened today (Monday), features new structure, lights and a repaired ProBounce surface.

A combined basketball and futsal court is set to open next Thursday, Oct. 3 at Stratton Woods Park (2431 Fox Mill Road) in Reston.

Construction on the court began in August. The $229,000 project is being supported by the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA), Volkswagen Group of America and the Great Outdoors Fund, a nonprofit that aims to expand access to recreational amenities.

The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) is seeking community feedback on some potential improvements at Hybla Valley Park.

The agency is considering replacing the two existing tennis courts at the park near Hybla Valley Elementary School (3431 Lockheed Blvd) with a combination basketball and futsal court. A new playground has also been proposed.

Dozens of volunteers will break out the work gloves and garden shears this Saturday (Sept. 14) to eliminate invasive plants around the “LOVE” sign by the Washington & Old Dominion Trail in Vienna.

The cleanup will clear the way for a native plant meadow that its organizer, the nonprofit Sustainability Matters, hopes will spawn similar beautification efforts all along the 45-mile-long regional trail.
