Almost seven years after his death, federal officials have determined that the two U.S. Park Police officers who pursued and shot McLean resident Bijan Ghaisar complied with department policies.

The report released yesterday (Tuesday) concludes officers Alejandro Amaya and Lucas Vinyard were reasonable in their belief that Ghaisar “presented a clear and immediate threat to public safety” when he fled after being rear-ended by a rideshare driver on the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Alexandria on Nov. 17, 2017.

Fairfax County police released body camera footage yesterday (Monday) of the Sept. 16 shooting of a 33-year-old woman during a welfare check in Reston.

An officer trained in crisis intervention fatally shot and killed Sydney Wilson, a Reston resident, after Wilson injured the officer with a knife, the video shows, corroborating the Fairfax County Police Department’s previous description of the encounter.

A 33-year-old woman was shot and killed by a Fairfax County police officer this morning (Monday) at the VY Reston Heights apartment building.

Officers were dispatched to the residences at 11830 Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston around 10:03 a.m. for a welfare check, according to the county’s police scanner. Officers reported “shots fired” at 10:17 a.m.

The family of a McLean man who was shot and killed by the police in 2022 has sued the Fairfax County Police Department for wrongful death.

The lawsuit was filed in Fairfax County Circuit Court on Wednesday (June 12), the Washington Post reported. It alleges that Police First Class Officer Edward George “had no reasonable ground” to believe he or anyone else was in immediate danger when he shot 26-year-old Jasper Aaron Lynch multiple times at the Lynch family home on July 7, 2022.

An officer who fatally shot a McLean man in 2022 violated Fairfax County Police Department policies, but the shooting itself was within policy and legal bounds, a new report on the FCPD’s investigation says.

In the report, which was released yesterday (Wednesday), Fairfax County Independent Police Auditor Richard Schott affirmed the police department and Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano’s findings that none of the three responding officers violated criminal law when they tased and shot 26-year-old Jasper Aaron Lynch at his home on July 7, 2022.
