Fairfax County will look at creating a corps of “community safety officers,” who would have fewer powers than sworn law-enforcement personnel but could support the police department’s mission in an era of recruiting challenges.
“Based on experiences in other jurisdictions around the country and in our region, it could have some merit,” Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw said when proposing on Tuesday (Feb. 18) that staff study the issue.
More than 4,000 properties in Fairfax City lost electricity in a power outage that affected local traffic signals as well as residents and businesses.
The City of Fairfax Police Department announced at 5:40 p.m. that all traffic signs and signals have now been restored to “normal operations,” though power outages are still affecting homes and businesses.

Police are investigating the the fatal shooting of a woman who died at Mount Vernon Hospital last night.
The Fairfax Police Department said around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday night the woman was taken to the hospital by a man who remained on-scene.

A man died after hitting a deer on the Dulles Airport Access Highway in Tysons last night (Wednesday).

Frantic police radio transmissions went out around 6:30 p.m., for mall-based Tysons Urban Team officers following a suspect in the parking lot outside of Bloomingdale’s. The suspect then reportedly entered the woods along Fashion Blvd, after which officers radioed that gunshots had been fired.
