Fairfax County’s state lawmakers file bills on rent gouging, speed cameras and more

As the Virginia General Assembly reaches its deadline for legislators to file bills for the 2024 session, Fairfax County’s representatives hope to pass bills on rent gouging, campaign finance reform and opioid prevention in schools.

The General Assembly convened in Richmond last Wednesday (Jan. 10) for a 60-day session ending March 9. With Democrats controlling the House of Delegates and the Senate, lawmakers could see at least some of their proposals become law. Here are some notable measures put forward:

Cinnamon roll shop opening next month in Village Centre at Dulles

Cinnamon lovers can soon rejoice as a cinnamon roll shop prepares to open in Herndon.

Cinnaholic is set for a grand opening at 2451 Centreville Road in Suite 20 on Feb. 9, according to Jessica Papa, a representative for the Herndon location.

Snow closes Fairfax County government, delaying start of early voting

Updated at 6 p.m. — The GW Parkway has reopened after closing for the snow, the National Park Service announced, though both north and southbound traffic is limited to a single lane in the construction area.

Earlier: Like the snow that triggered them, facility closures and service delays are piling up in Fairfax County.

Bomb Threat Reported at Lake Braddock School — Security at Lake Braddock Secondary School was stepped up yesterday (Thursday) after an anonymous student made a threat to bomb the school on TikTok. Fairfax County Public Schools to close again Friday with more snow expected

The D.C. area is expected to be hit with another round of snow tomorrow (Friday), prompting Fairfax County Public Schools to call for its second snow day this week.

All schools and central offices will be closed tomorrow, FCPS announced at 5:25 p.m. today. The closure includes extracurricular activities, field trips and other events on school grounds.

As Fairfax County kicks off early voting, local party officials weigh in on presidential primary

Updated at 10:15 a.m. on 1/19/2024 — With the county government closed due to snow, the start of early voting has been delayed to 9 a.m.-5 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday), the Fairfax County Office of Elections announced.

Earlier: Early voting for the 2024 presidential primary election is set to begin tomorrow (Friday) Saturday (Jan. 20) in Fairfax County, with local party officials and campaign strategists projecting varied voter turnout.

Reston Station apartment owner wants to convert open lawn to dog park

The owner of Russell at Reston Station is seeking to turn the apartment building's open lawn into a dog park (via Google Maps)

A new dog park is proposed at Russell at Reston Station, an apartment community at 11500 Commerce Park Drive.

The building owner, ST Wiehle LLC, is seeking to build the dog park in place of an open lawn after seeing many community members and residents use the existing park for their dogs.

Pair of homes proposed in Herndon would occupy floodplain

The Town of Herndon is considering the placement of two single-family homes in a floodplain on Monroe Street.

First approved in January 2022, the proposal has returned to the Herndon Town Council after the applicant sought to increase the footprint of the proposed residential structures.
