Federal shutdown exposed economic instability faced by many in D.C. region, nonprofit says

In the wake of the country’s longest-ever federal government shutdown, a key safety-net organization is calling for a renewed emphasis on helping lower-income, working residents achieve economic independence across Fairfax County and the broader D.C. region.

While welcoming the shutdown’s end on Thursday (Nov. 13), United Way of the National Capital Area President and CEO Rosie Allen-Herring said at a briefing that morning that her organization believes “the impact will be felt, for thousands, for months ahead.”

Annual exhibition at Fairfax County Government Center shows healing power of art

At Pathway Homes, art is celebrated as an outlet for at-risk local residents facing mental health issues to express themselves. The results can be seen throughout July at the Fairfax County Government Center.

The annual “Summer of the Arts” exhibit, now in its 12th year, features more than 40 pieces in media ranging from watercolors and pastels to poetry and 3D modeling. Works are typically sold for $15 to $75, with 100% of the proceeds going to the artists.
