Olympic medalists join FCPS to kick off new water safety program for kids

Fairfax County Public Schools this week celebrated the launch of a new program to help young learners make safe choices in the water with an immersive “water safety festival” featuring visits from Olympic swimmers.

Students from grades 3-5 gathered at the Skyview High School swimming pool on Tuesday (Oct. 13) to try out the basics of swimming, paddle from inside an inflatable boat, and hear from two-time Olympic gold medalist Cullen Jones. Maritza Correia McClendon, an Olympic silver medalist, also visited earlier in the day.

Search of Potomac River underway after swimmer reported missing in Great Falls area

First responders in swift water boats and a U.S. Park Police helicopter are scouring the Potomac River for a man who went missing while swimming in the Great Falls Park area yesterday (Sunday).

Montgomery County’s police and fire departments received a call around 6:15 p.m. for a swimmer in distress near the Billy Goat Trail in the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park in Potomac, Maryland.

The Water Mine in Reston set to reopen for summer this weekend

Reston’s own water park is suiting up for a new season, just in time to provide relief from a blast of summer heat.

The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole will reopen for 2026 at 11 a.m. this Saturday, May 23 at Lake Fairfax Park (1400 Lake Fairfax Drive), giving local families an aquatic escape for Memorial Day weekend.

Seeding meeting on horizon for popular summertime swim league

The seeding meeting that will determine the setups of the 17 divisions for the 2025 Northern Virginia Swimming League summer season has been scheduled for Sunday, March 2 at Key Middle School in Springfield.

Representative from each of the league’s 102 teams will be present to discuss and arrange the divisions. There are six teams in each division.
