After three years of construction on its I-495 Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project, the Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing to advance work on the actual toll lanes.

To make way for the new lanes, crews will shift traffic for all four southbound, general-purpose lanes on I-495 (also known as the Capital Beltway Outer Loop) to newly built lanes in McLean, starting tomorrow (Friday) around 8 p.m.

Fairfax County leaders remain uneasy about the Virginia Department of Transportation’s proposed I-495 Southside Express Lanes project and the possible impact of widening the highway on residents of neighboring communities.

The speed limit on Fairfax County Parkway has been reduced and will soon be enforced by speed cameras, as construction to widen the major thoroughfare continues.

A speed limit of 45 mph — down from 50 mph — took effect today (Friday), with workers unveiling new signage throughout the work zone from I-66 near Fair Lakes to Route 123 (Ox Road) in Fairfax Station, according to Fairfax County.

Traffic will be limited to one lane on a portion of Walker Road in Great Falls this weekend.

Flaggers will direct traffic on the 0.2-mile stretch of road between Park Royal Drive and Walker Mill Road from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday (May 18), the Virginia Department of Transportation announced.

Fairfax County leaders believe they and other Northern Virginia leaders are getting an unfair deal when it comes to state transportation funding.

The Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday (May 13) to send a letter to Virginia Secretary of Transportation Sheppard Miller III, expressing concern about being passed over in the latest round of “Smart Scale” funding for transportation improvements.

Update —  With rain in the forecast for this weekend, the traffic shift for northbound I-495 has been postponed to the night of May 9 through the morning of May 10, VDOT says.

Earlier: Traffic on the Capital Beltway (I-495) in the Tysons area will start moving to newly constructed lanes on the outer side of the highway tomorrow (Friday).

Construction has started on new shared-use pedestrian/cyclist paths in the Fair Oaks area, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced last week.

The project will replace the current sidewalks on Post Forest Drive and Random Hills Road with 10-foot-wide shared-use paths.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced today that it’s kicking off widening work on two miles of Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) near Fairfax Station starting this weekend.

The widening will run from Route 123 (Ox Road) to Nomes Court/Ladues End Lane. The goal is reduced congestion along with the installation of a shared-use path and a grade-separated cyclist/pedestrian crossing, along with other improvements.
