Langley football team rallies past Wakefield in second half

The Langley Saxons were outgained by a hundred total yards, but not outscored, in their Oct. 10 Liberty District road victory over the host Wakefield Warriors.

Langley (6-1, 2-1) rallied from a 17-7 second-quarter deficit to win the high-school football game, 42-30, bouncing back from their lone loss of the season a week earlier.

Wakefield amassed 466 total yards to Langley’s 368, but the Saxons took advantage of four turnovers.

As usual, quarterback Cole Samburg and runningback Robert Roncskevitz led the Langley offense.

Samburg was 10 of 15 passing for 154 yards and ran for 19 yards. He threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Roncskevitz and ran for another score from a yard away.

Roncskevitz rushed for 134 yards on 13 carries, including a 12-yard scoring run. He also caught two passes for 37 yards.

Jackson Popovich ran for three Langley touchdowns, gaining 58 yards rushing. Connor Clarke caught three passes for 53 yards, Eli Dyrud had three for 17, Vincent Shen one for 41 and Mark Muehlheuser had a catch. Mateo Arboleda kicked six extra points.

Langley trailed 24-21 at halftime, then took the lead by outscoring Wakefield 14-0 in the third quarter, adding a final touchdown in the fourth period.

On defense, Clarke had an interception and fumble recovery, Roncskevitz had an interception and Andy Wang a fumble recovery. Among leading tacklers were Roncskevitz, Clarke, Hudson Eberline, Brandon Dinh, Ellington Roane and Wyatt Kenney. Wang had a tackle for a loss.

Langley is in a three-way tie for second place. The Washington-Liberty Generals are in first place at 3-0; Langley hosts Washington-Liberty (7-0, 3-0) on Nov. 2.
