Just one more game stands between the Madison High School varsity football team and an undefeated regular season.
The 9-0 Warhawks visit the Centreville Wildcats on Friday (Nov. 8) in their final game prior to the region playoffs.
With a win, Madison will claim its first 10-o regular season since 1978. The Warhawks went 11-1 overall that fall, losing to the Annandale Atoms in the championship game of the Northern Region tournament.
Centreville enters the Concorde District clash with a 4-5 record and two straight victories. Madison sits atop the district with a 4-0 record.
A victory over Centreville also will give the Warhawks the outright district championship, its fourth crown in five seasons. Madison was second in the Concorde last fall.
Following the regular season, Madison likely will be the first or second seed in the eight-team 6D North Region tournament, a competition the Warhawks have won the past three seasons.
In the game against Centreville, Madison runningback Dominic Knicely needs 180 yards to reach 1,000 for the season. The senior has been a top receiver and kick returner for the Warhawks, in addition to leading the team’s ground attack.
Madison fullback Matthew Weiler has 563 yards running in nine games.
The Warhawks finished 9-1 in the regular season last year.
