Fall season was collective standout for Potomac School’s sports teams

There have been plenty of successful fall sports seasons turned in over the years by Potomac School Panthers private-school varsity teams.

Then came the 2024 high-school campaign — one of the school’s best ever.

Every Potomac School fall team had a winning record. Multiple squads won conference championships, or came close, one won a state crown with another two finishing second, and many participated and did well in Division I state tournaments.

Steve Lachut took over as Potomac School’s athletic director in July. He credited the athletes and coaches for the success during the fall.

“The coaches love what they are doing here,” Lachut told FFXnow as he watched the Potomac School girls soccer team receive the championship banner for winning a postseason conference tournament.

The two most accomplished squads were the boys cross country and golf teams.

The cross-country unit won conference and state championships. The golf team finished undefeated (10-0) during regular-season matches, then dominated postseason team and individual conference tournaments. Colton Rodgers was the individual champion of both tournaments, shooting a 64 in the individual event.

Also for Potomac School:

  • The boys soccer team won regular-season and conference tournaments. Then as the fourth seed in the Division I state tourney, the Panthers finished 1-1, losing in the semifinals to the top seed.
  • The girls soccer team won a conference-tournament title, then the third seed was defeated in the semifinals of the state.
  • The girls tennis team won 15 matches and finished second in conference and state tournaments. The Panthers were the top seed in the state tourney and were ranked No. 1 in the state the entire season, before losing in the state final.
  • The girls cross-country team finished second in the state meet and fourth in its conference event.
  • The girls volleyball team was the No. 2 seed in the state tourney and reached the semifinals.
  • The girls field-hockey team had an 11-10 record and was the sixth seed in the state tournament.
  • The Potomac School football team bounced back to have a winning 5-4 season after going 1-8 the year before. At one point, the Panthers were ranked among the top six in the Division I state poll this season and were in the running to earn a state-tournament berth.

Collectively, the fall teams, not counting cross-country, amassed 78 victories. Cross-country teams have few if any school-on-school dual meets, mostly competing against multiple opponents.
