Fairfax County police believe speeding and alcohol both contributed to a crash on Fairfax County Parkway in Reston that killed a woman over the weekend.
Officers and medical personnel were dispatched to northbound Fairfax County Parkway over Elden Street around 2:40 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 23) for the single-vehicle crash.
The crash occurred when the driver of a 2019 BMW M850I careened off the roadway, flipping over before it came to a stop, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
A female passenger and the male driver were both transported to a hospital, where the woman, Tina Habibi, 23, of Herndon, was declared dead. The man suffered injuries that police said were not life-threatening.
“Preliminarily, detectives believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash,” the FCPD said in a press release. “Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.”
Habibi appears to be the 45th person to die in a crash in Fairfax County this year. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is currently reporting 39 fatalities, but the database hasn’t been updated yet with a motorcyclist’s death in late October and four deaths that have occurred in November, including that of a toddler in Chantilly.
There have now been three fatal crashes on Fairfax County Parkway in 2024, according to the DMV’s data, including one in March where a man driving the wrong way collided with a Tesla. In addition, a woman died in late July after crashing at the parkway’s exit to Baron Cameron Avenue in Reston.
