Langley player, West Springfield coach chosen best in Va. volleyball

The Virginia High School League recently announced its Class 6 all-state girls volleyball team, with Langley Saxons’ junior setter Claire Mo chosen as the Player of the Year and West Springfield head coach Stephanie Noriega Coach of the Year.

Mo helped Langley (28-2) win the state championship, the team’s fourth in program history, this fall. Noriega led West Springfield to the state-tournament semifinals, where it lost to Langley.

Mo averaged 10.1 assists per set this season and has 1,652 career assists. With a 97 serving percentage, she nailed 48 aces with only 12 errors.

On the defensive side, Mo had 212 digs and 19 blocks.

Noriega coached her 20th season at West Springfield, which finished with a 30-2 record this season and won district and region championships.

The all-state team consists of nine position players and one libero. In addition to Mo, other Fairfax County players chosen first-team all-state were Chantilly senior Mimi Mambu, West Springfield senior Evey Jurden, Langley senior Ana Toumazatos, Madison sophomore Laila Chadwick and Lake Braddock junior Tehillah Garrison.

Chosen second-team all-state from Fairfax County schools were Herndon sophomore Coco Lewis and Woodson juniors Sofie Ferrell and Livia Lee.
