For the last two seasons, Cole Samburg and Robert Roncskevitz became familiar names on the Langley Saxons football team.
The offensive-backfield-mates each amassed significant offensive statistics during two years of starting action for their high-school team, junior Samburg as the quarterback and senior Roncskevitz as runningback.
For their performances this season, both were chosen first-team all-Liberty District at their positions.
Opponents spent considerable time preparing for the duo, often without much success.
Opposing head football coaches Josh Shapiro of Washington-Liberty and Bruce Hanson of Yorktown highly praised the two players. Yorktown had little success stopping the two in a lopsided loss this season. Washington-Liberty defeated Langley twice this fall in close games.
“Langley is very efficient on offense. [Samburg] is very good and gave us trouble,” Shapiro told FFXnow.
Said Hanson: “They did things on offense we hadn’t seen on film. We couldn’t stop their quarterback and their offense.”
Langley gained 564 total yards in the 48-14 win over Yorktown. Roncskevitz ran for 184 yards and caught seven passes for 59 more yards, and he scored four touchdowns.
Samburg passed for 156 and two scores and rushed for 162.
Both players compiled impressive statistics this season in helping Langley (9-3) earn a 6D North Region tournament playoff berth as the No. 3 seed and a second-place finish in the Liberty District behind Washington-Liberty.
“Both had the kind of seasons we expected from them,” Langley head coach Greg Potteiger said. “Cole threw for more yards than he did a year ago, and Robert had a few less rushing yards, but he caught more passes.”
Samburg, a member of Langley’s club ice-hockey team during the winter, completed 143 of 217 passes for 1,775 yards and 18 touchdowns, and he rushed for 602 more yards and three scores.
Roncskevitz, a senior and standout wrestler during the winter for Langley, ran for 947 yards and 11 TDs. He caught 27 passes for 380 yards and four scores.
With his senior season remaining, Samburg’s two-season passing totals are 2,716 yards, and he has thrown 22 touchdowns. He has run for 1,258 yards and nine scores.
Roncskevitz played a little on varsity as a runningback during his sophomore season. He ran for 2,131 career yards and 23 touchdowns. Roncskevitz caught 47 passes for 544 yards and five TDs.
Roncskevitz also was a starter on defense this season, and was chosen first-team all-district as a linebacker. He finished with 78 tackles, including three sacks, had two interceptions, forced two fumbles and recovered one.
