The Madison Warhawks and Marshall Statesmen had opposite results in their final boys basketball games prior to participating in holiday tournaments later this week.
Madison (6-2) routed visiting Independence, 62-39, in a non-district high-school game for its fifth-straight win on Dec. 20, while host Marshall (6-3, 1-1) lost to the Yorktown Patriots (7-1), 59-57, in a seesaw Liberty District contest on the same night.
For Madison in its win, Ryan Furlong scored 18 points, Hobbes Fiel added 16 and Michael Dinkelacker 12.
“We played really well,” Madison coach Kevin Roller said.
Madison defeated Choptican in southern Maryland, 43-39, in its previous game despite scoring just eight points in the second half. Mason Burger (19 points) made six three-pointers for Madison in the first half as the Warhawks led 35-18 at halftime.
Dinkelacker scored 10 against Choptican. Fiel made two foul shots with four seconds to play to seal the victory.
In Marshall’s game against Yorktown, there were two ties and seven lead changes in the first half. Yorktown took the lead for good at 30-28 late in the second quarter. The Patriots led 35-30 at halftime and 45-41 after three periods.
After Yorktown built an 11-point fourth-quarter lead, Marshall rallied in the final stages. The Statesmen had one final possession after Yorktown missed two foul shots, but did not get off a decent shot.
Leading Marshall was center Anderson Krisko with 18 points, 13 rebounds and a blocked shot. Shreyas Vaidya scored 11, Osteen Suguru had 10 points and five assists, and Jackson Fraser and Trey Lonardo each had six points and four assists.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Marshall, which defeated Mount Vernon, 53-38, and district rival McLean, 49-46, in its previous two games.
Marshall and Madison will play in out-of-town holiday tournaments beginning Thursday (Dec. 26).
