Pedestrian killed in Route 28 crash involving a truck

A pedestrian was killed this morning (Monday) in a crash on Route 28 in Chantilly that involved a commercial tanker truck.

Police officers, firefighters and medics were dispatched to northbound Route 28 (Sully Road) under Poplar Tree Road around 6:33 a.m. for a crash involving a pedestrian who was reportedly struck by a “large tanker-type vehicle that carries gas,” according to scanner traffic.

Upon arriving, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responders found the pedestrian not moving or breathing on the highway’s right shoulder, prompting a closure of multiple northbound lanes.

The pedestrian, an adult man, was declared dead at the scene, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a tweet at 7:21 a.m.

With two lanes of Route 28 closed, the police advised drivers to find an alternate route. As of 10:17 a.m., traffic backups were approximately 1 mile long, according to Virginia Department of Transportation traffic cameras.

“The striking vehicle remained on scene,” the FCPD said. “Crash reconstruction detectives are investigating.”

An FCPD spokesperson confirmed that a “large truck was involved in this morning’s crash,” though the exact circumstances remain under investigation.

This is the second fatal pedestrian crash that Fairfax County has seen in December, following one that killed a Lake Braddock Secondary School student in Burke on Dec. 4.

Preliminary Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles data indicates that 17 pedestrians have died in Fairfax County this year, not including today’s crash, though the community advocacy group Northern Virginia Families for Safe Streets reported a higher total of 19 fatalities through November.

Route 28 has now been the site of three fatal crashes in 2024. The people killed in the previous two incidents — Centreville resident Juan Rossi Jr. and Herndon resident David Arias Sandoval — were both motorcyclists.
