Fairfax County Public Schools students have been granted a third extra day of winter break.
FCPS announced just after 5 p.m. that no classes will be held tomorrow (Wednesday), as cleanup efforts continue following yesterday’s snowstorm, which dumped an estimated 6 to 10 inches of snow on the county.
Extracurricular activities, team practices, field trips, adult education classes and other programs on school grounds have also been canceled, and the county’s School Age Child Care (SACC) centers will once again be closed.
However, school offices will open to the public tomorrow at 11 a.m., so those employees are expected to “report to work pending safety and childcare concerns,” FCPS said.
While tomorrow’s forecast doesn’t call for any snow, overnight temperatures are projected to dip as low as 19 degrees, raising the possibility of melted snow and ice freezing again, according to the National Weather Service.
“While snow has ended, continue to exercise caution on roads given the potential for refreezing overnight tonight,” the agency said in a hazardous weather outlook issued for the D.C. region at 5:05 p.m.
The NWS says there’s a “slight” threat of another winter storm materializing this weekend. Its current forecast shows a 70% chance of snow in Fairfax County Friday night (Jan. 10) and a 40% chance on Saturday (Jan. 11).
