A driver died last night (Monday) after crashing on Sterling Road in Herndon.
Police officers were dispatched to westbound Sterling Road at Rock Hill Road at 7:35 p.m. for the single-vehicle crash, according to the Town of Herndon Police Department.
“There’s a colored sedan that struck a tree … coming into town,” a dispatcher said on the police scanner. “Couldn’t tell if anyone was in the vehicle, but the lights were on, and there’s steam coming from the front end.”
Emergency responders found the driver unconscious in the front seat. Described on the scanner as an “elderly” man, the driver was taken to a hospital, where he ultimately died, Herndon police announced at 8:45 p.m.
The right lane and right turn lane on westbound Sterling Road at Rock Hill Road were closed as police investigated and cleared the crash. All lanes reopened around 10:49 p.m.
While a crash report hasn’t been filed yet, HPD spokesperson Lisa Herndon says drugs, alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash.
“For the victim and family’s privacy, we won’t be releasing any details,” she told FFXnow. “It was a very tragic accident.”
This is the Fairfax County area’s second fatal crash of 2025. In early January, an 89-year-old man from Alexandria died after crashing a van on the Franconia-Springfield Parkway.
Based on preliminary Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles data, Fairfax County had 54 crash fatalities in 2024, trailing only the 66 deaths reported in 2022 for the most since the online database began in 2010.
