A truck caught fire after colliding with a sedan on I-66 in the Vienna area earlier this afternoon (Monday), requiring a shutdown of all westbound lanes.

Units with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to I-66 West prior to Nutley Street for the crash around 1:15 p.m., per scanner traffic.

“Crews arrived with one tractor trailer and a sedan that collided,” the FCFRD said on social media. “There was fire coming from the tractor trailer.”

All westbound lanes on the highway at the Nutley Street exit in Oakton were closed to traffic as firefighters work to extinguish the blaze. As of 2:08 p.m., backups were approximately 4 miles long, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation’s traffic cameras.

“Please avoid area and use an alternate route,” VDOT said.

The left-most lane at Exit 62A reopened shortly after 2:30 p.m., according to an update from VDOT.

An occupant was transported to a hospital with injuries considered non-life-threatening, though the fire department hasn’t commented on whether the person was in the truck or the sedan. Scanner traffic suggests it was the tractor-trailer driver who requested emergency medical services.
